MSTS running without disc in drive.

Post by earwigo »

Hello, I have come back to using MSTS on my Windows 7 computer, and wish to get it running as I used to have - without the need to put the disc in every time. I thought I knew how to do this, but have forgotten! :( Please could anyone enlighten me?
Many thanks,
Stuart. :-?

Hi Stuart,
Apply the Web-based update, obtainable here :
http://msts.steam4me.net/MSTS_Updates/index.html

As you are using Windows 7, note the recommendations to install MSTS in a folder other than C:\Program Files, due to permission conditions.

Cheers,
Ged

Hello. I've downloaded, unzipped and run the required file Train Update 1, but still it asks for the disc! I'm using the Xplosive version, by the way. Any further ideas, please?
Thanks.
Stuart.

As you're using W7 - did you run the update as administrator?

Hi Stuart,
In addition to Geoffrey's question, if your MSTS is not in the default location (C:\Program Files\Microsoft Games\Train Simulator), you must change the location in the unzip screen - click on the BROWSE button and navigate to your Train Simulator folder. Unfortunately, it doesn't look in the Registry for the path to MSTS!

Often you need to reboot the computer for the change to take effect.

Hi Yuri,
Thanks for that link - although I've been using MSTS for several years now, I'm ashamed to say I've never seen that tutorial! It certainly answers most of the questions posed these days, especially with regard to running under Windows 7.
There's only one point which, in my opinion, needs clarifying for newcomers. If you have an Xplosive issue, even though it is v1.4, it still needs the CD to be in the drive; therefore the Web-based v1.4 upgrade should be applied.

Regards,
Ged

That one tutorial (well the XP one and now the W7 one) consume more bandwidth than all the other 150 tutorials put together on a month-to-month basis. I think it's also one of the most commonly referred tutorials on train-sim.com.

Criticism noted and web page updated to clarify and ampilfy: see http://msts.steam4me.net/tutorials/inst ... ml#updates and tell me if you think that's better (you may need to hit Ctrl-F5 to see latest version).
