Doncaster works

Post by Klaabu »

The idea to create something like this is very welcome. Class 03 very well done also lots of rolling stock suitable for scrap yard operations. But I'm very disappointed because scrap yard and depot are not connected to the mainline!!! This really sets limits to scenario creation. For that reason I'm giving only 6 out of 10 to this package.

If it's not connected to the mainline station, how far does the track extend beyond the station itself?

Hi guys
They made it pretty clear it was to be just the works sidings and as that goes, including Dereks excellent 03 shunter, i think they've done a very good job. Seems to be plenty to play with and its very different to anything we have so far.I'll go out on a limb and give it a 9

It's definitely worth at least 8 and a half /10 for the 03 shunter alone, though £14.99 is a little steep, a tenner would possibly have been more appealing.

The yard/scrap itself is superb, in my opinion. The whole package i'll give 9/10. I can also spot a few reskins of the 03 on the way!

Dark.

Absolutely agree it's superbly done no doubt. Nice environment. The entire station area is well done and I'm wondering why this large yard is not connected to mainline. This should add so much more opportunities for scenario makers. For example shunter interacting with mainline traffic. I know that AI action in RW leaves to be desired but something can still be done to make scenarios more interesting in existing conditions. Separating yard from mainline is not good idea at all.

Hmmm, I don't know, I haven't purchased it yet, but, if you get a brand new Class 03, and lots of scrap locos and cabs as well as all the new buildings and The Works, as seen on the screenshots, I suppose £15 isn't tooooo bad, for what you get. I suppose if they had added mainlines and Doncaster Station that would have pushed the price up a bit more.

EDIT: Just a minute, I've since read the product description on Steam, you do get Donny Station, so what are you all complaining about.....

From what I have seen, the station is actually there but not specifically modelled with new bits. However, can someone answer how far the track extends north, south and towards Sheffield? Might be handy for one of those little AI scenarios that have been talked about set in the 80's.

Darren, the answer is not very far. A few signal blocks in each direction. Not enough for a spotting scenario :(

Yes, that was what I was getting at.

I am struggling to see why the station was really included if it's not connected to the yard, and the track doesn't extend too far, unless I am not getting something (which is quite possibly the case!).

Ah, possibly not enough room for AI to build up speed for the through roads as well then.

I wonder how many would be interested in a small contained "modern" Doncaster route featuring just the station area but with unscenerised sections at each end to enable a little "Day at Doncaster" AI world. :-?

I certainly would! If this requires the Doncaster Works route, it may even persuade me to buy it

I'm not quite sure what this add-on is all about. I'm hanging fire for now and saving my cash for the Class 31 tomorrow!!

I'm quite interested in the Doncaster Works concept, I am after all a first generation diesel fan, but the stated lack of a main-line link has put me off. I envisaged this add-on being about hauling rusty relics from the mainline Doncaster area into the yard but it sounds like it's a shunter add-on. I can't quite get my head around how it includes Doncaster station but the yard area is completely separate? how does that work? is the mainline bit just for eye-candy in the background?

One for the shunter-holics this one I think! Personally shunters don't do it for me so I'll hold off until the release of the beast tomorrow.

I don't think so mate, if anything, it would have a WCML requirement to use the catenary assets. Certainly an interesting little idea though. I think I already have the canopies built in max from an earlier idea.

I'm not complaining about station. Station is there and quite well modelled. Keep in mind this package tries to restore Doncaster station area anno 1980. Sure it was looking bit different compared to how it's looking now. So I'm only complaining about missing connection between yard/depot and station mainline. You'll get only shunting area without opportunity to visit station tracks.
Darpor wrote:However, can someone answer how far the track extends north, south and towards Sheffield?
Station tracks are long enough to every direction. Knowing the reality shunting locos rarely leave station area I can't see reason for isolating yard tracks from mainline ones.

I would be extremely interested too!
