I've been working on a train spotting type scenario for the Westhouses route for my own pleasure, based in the 1950's. The four track main line, with branches makes this route ideal for such an scenario. Trains on all four lines, trains branching off or pulling into a yard, sometimes with no gaps, sometimes waiting for up to ten minutes and then another three or four come at once. If I can finish it off, I will upload it, but it is pay ware heavy.

I've made a start on a spotting scenario at Thirsk. Starting at 1130, I've got 2 hours worth of down trains so far & have a few up services in as well - 13 services already. I could easily double the duration of the scenario, but I don't know if folks would last that long with no driving whatsoever :)

I think spotting not driving scenerio's is a great idea even with lots of payware and if you have to wait for a few mins for something to happen so what its just like the real thing apart from you won't need your camera, bins and notebook :wink:

Bring it on guys and please upload, I certainly wont be complaining.

I did something like this some time ago for a fictitious timetable at York station using the default York – Newcastle route (I don’t have the modern version). I have two entry and two exit portals south of York with a similar setup just north of York going to Newcastle and again to Scarborough. This reduces the number of active AI trains. I put in some additional signals to get round trains entering from the portals failing with a train in the same block. Therefore I haven’t had issues with trains entering from portals. It works a treat EXCEPT for trains sent into any of the terminus platforms at York. They enter, stop, offload passengers but when it is time to leave again they run into the platform end and stay there. I have never solved this so I now have trains starting at the terminus platforms which run out to the exit portals while others enter from the entry portals and stop at the terminus platforms but go no further.

What's happened to these 'trainspotting scenarios'? Things seem to have gone quiet for a couple of months.
As long as I gaze on Waterloo sunset I am in paradise

I haven't forgotten about the one I'm working on, based on Thirsk 1980 style. I have a few RW things that are higher on my priorty list at the moment, but hope to get back to it once things (hopefully) quiet down.
Expanding the TS wagon fleet.

This is a great idea and I think there would be interest in this. I'm currently developing my first scenario with train spotting opportunities in mind, when I release it to the community I will recommend some good spotting areas on the route. In the scenario you can either click on and drive the intended consist at the start of the scenario or if you prefer simply relocate somewhere else on the route for a bit of trainspotting. If you get bored spotting you can then just click on the next service that passes and take over the train for the rest of the journey. Thats the plan anyway, currently testing. Not tested the trainspotting bit yet so I'm not sure if you can just relocate to any part of the map but it should work I'm hoping that if no player consist is set in the scenario the 1km roaming limit from the consist does not apply.

It works it will give the scenario more variety and some more re playability I feel.

The problem I am finding is that if it is a large route such as the PLE route for which I am developing this scenario, you need to put a lot of consists in there for it to be viable for trainspotting at various points on the route and this has a big impact on the frames per second! If it was a normal scenario, you would only have staged AI traffic around the area where the player consist is going to be at specific times. For trainspotting anywhere on the route you need to have services running everywhere at all times. As such I will be recommending 3.0GHz Core 2 processor at very minimum, 3.0Ghz Core i5 preferred otherwise dont bother downloading the trainspotting edition. I'll probably release a normal version with some of the AI consists removed for people to run it on slower computers.

Put me down as in favour of this... there are times when I just want to sit and watch trains come and go about their business... preferrably 70/80s with loco hauled trains... watching them run around, terminate and head to the depot... etc. Altho, I have to admit, I do prefer to drive most days :D
