Snow Warning: Britain Set For Winter Blast

We got snow, then rain which froze the snow again. My car was like a giant ice cube when I finished work! It then snowed more heavily later on.

On the route I was doing only one road wasn't gritted, so there was no drama - it was quite interesting having the ABS kick in at 5mph, and then wheelspinning away from the stop. Our services weren't affected too much beyond delays and a few diversions around untreated roads or RTAs, though I think north Manchester was hit quite badly, with a lot of services around Bury being cancelled.

Looking out of my bedroom windows at around 2:00 a.m. was quite wierd!

Although it was the dead of night, everywhere was plainly visible. Even the dark corners were illuminated by a dull orange glow that seemed to eminate from all directions. The low clouds were reflecting light from streetlamps...and the reflected light from the laying snow.

It was like I was wearing very dark orange welding goggles in broad daylight!!

I didn't get any snow, the worst thing was that the low and high pressure was supposed to meet practically above my head. It rained. Then it snowed a smidge (Wet snow) Then it Hailed, and the temperature dropped below zero and everything froze. Then defrosted about 8AM. I haven't seen any snow this winter!

Odd Thing lots of Airports closed but RAF Brize Norton open and there was training flights up

Where? There are still disruptions but I'm not aware of any UK airports with scheduled flights that are currently closed.

Compared to what other parts of Europe experienced perhaps we were lucky.

It was awkward on Saturday afternoon and first thing Sunday morning in Milnrow, but it was OK for the trip to work (currently Birchwood near Warrington).

No snow for me! Left the UK at 11.55 on sat am and now enjoying the 26 deg heat

We certainly had an extremely cold weekend over here. It's not often that the call goes out for people to avoid the roads unless absolutely necessary over here, but it did. Lots of people ignored it of course, and there were a lot of smashes - including at least two big chain reactions - due to people driving through a hard blizzard as though they were on a fully ploughed, gritted and cleared road. Even with decent winter tyres, that just doesn't work reliably.

The trains struggled a bit too, but they always keep those moving somehow, even if they get late and crowded. I have actually been on one which got literally too full to accept more passengers, partly due to a points failure which blocked the station throat I think. Further delay was then caused by someone forcing open a door which we had been told very firmly was out of order - it took at least ten minutes to get it shut again. Disembarking at my stop was quite an adventure in itself. Fortunately I think they were able to expedite more trains along the same route immediately after us, so people weren't left standing in the cold for much longer.

Current temperature outside is a relatively mild -17°C.
