What on earth is going on

Post by macclad »

Many appologies before I start my rant!

With MSTS, to install a new route you had to download a file the size of a small solar system. Everyone hated that. But at least after you had dowloaded it you had the route to do with what you wanted. :)
And then, like a saviour to the traisim word came RailWorks, far prettier, far more engaging to play. :D
Then came the sting in the tail, all the expesive payware to play on it.
Then came the medics to extract the sting when you find out how good the add ons are compared to MSTS. :D:D
And then the freeware stuff arrived, quality like we'd never see before!! :D :D
The it all falls to pieces  the execrable 'assets needed' readmes. All the fantastic, wonderful, beautiful third party addos, requiring a gazillion additional files to run them
The comes a new payware route, looks fantastic, looks awsome, thinks I might expect to download a complete, enjoyable PAID FOR route.
Looks like I'm going to be dissappoited again.....
Pay me $21ish, oh and don't forget to download these additional files to make the route work.......
I'm sorry If I'm going to pay for an add on I want it to work without additional addons. I've paid for stuff, I'll carry on payig for good stuff. I think good content deserves to be paid for (Fict British tramway looks like it would be worth at least 15 quid of anyone's money) but ask me to pay for something that needs additional dowloads, forget it!!
Makes my blood boil, makes me want to shout and swear.
Makes me think some one saw us all comig and is exracting the you know what.
Still loving Railworks though!

I think he may be referring to Richard Garber's Ohio Steel. That's sold on his website for $21 and just popped up in Steam as well.

Interesting that there's no mention of the additional requirements in the Steam blurb

I don't know of any payware routes which require additional items to make them work.

I have all these, and they all worked "out of the box":
IOW
Rascal & Cottonwood
Colton & Northern
WCML North
Newcastle to York Modern
Bristol to Exeter
GARL

Hi

Sorry; what I meant by that was that it's not clear whether they are included in the Steam version, although the price looks the same either way :-?

I'm pretty certain they are, as this has been the case with the Steam releases of the other AllAboards routes

Rich Garber has always utilised the content from 3DTrains on his layouts, namely, the Rural Landscapes and Scale Roads, they are both available as Payware, or, freebie lower resolution assets, depending on the quality that you want on your map. If you don't want to spend any more money then get the freeware stuff, it'll enhance your route. As the items are not his, I don't think that 3DT will allow any Payware assets to be uploaded with his route on Steam, but, you can go to their website for any freeware products.

Well, if the additional things are available in free formats, then that's not a problem I guess. However, in my honest opinion I think that everything you need in a payware addon should be included really (again, if the Steam version does this, not a problem). I'm also not overly sure on the use of external addons to run payware addons, in other words, a pack would be better as a 'pack', where any non-default assets are individual to the developer, if that makes sense, but that's just me. :)

That's not the point I was tryig to make yesterday, all be it through a red mist! I have no problem paying for stuff, but if I do pay for something I expect it to work out of the box with out being dependant upon downloading other stuff to make it work. This is why I've more or less given up downloading routes and senarios from here because it's just too much messing around making sure you've got all the required assets and then finding you've missed one which is only available from some random website!! I think this is more a rant against a weekness of RW more than against UKTS or the route builders, because when I dabble with route building I have no idea what assets I'm using at all

Purchasing the new Ohio Steel route through Steam will get you all the required downloads in one go and a bonus Norfolk Southern SD40-2 pack. Do keep in mind that people with limited bandwidth will appreciate the option to get only the route if they already have a previous All Aboard route or have the high-resolution versions of the 3DTrains downloads needed.

Hi

Have you got your scenery level (in graphics options) set to a high enough number ?
