That RAM is minuscule, you'll need more than that just to run modern OS'

Re: Railworks rec specs?
Considering that the recommended specs from the manual are a 3 GHz single-core CPU, 2 gigs of RAM and a GeForce6/Radeon 9XXX with 256 megs of RAM, you should be pretty well covered apart from the RAM

Certainly lacking on RAM, installing more should be your first step. How much you can actually fit depends on your motherboard, do you have a manual to see how much RAM it does support?
The X600 graphics card has a pretty low bandwidth, the 'top end' card in that series (X600 GT) topping out at just under 12 Gb/s so you could suffer from a bit of lag in densely populated areas.
Are the specs you've quoted what you have now or what you have your eye on?

In my opinion. no. Your OS will take most of that 2GB of memory, so you need to double it, at least.NickBradshaw wrote:You've now got me a bit worried about my existing specs, will this be enough?

I agree go for at least 4 GB so you can run the 4gb patchalanch wrote:In my opinion. no. Your OS will take most of that 2GB of memory, so you need to double it, at least.NickBradshaw wrote:You've now got me a bit worried about my existing specs, will this be enough?

I thought it had been established that the '4gb patch' was now part of the default RW installation from Steam.FrankJ wrote: I agree go for at least 4 GB so you can run the 4gb patch

I have RW running in 2.5GB with Vista 32 bit and this seems to be plenty - running the WCML North uses about 1.3GB I've found, and this is a pretty demanding route - the OS should take a few hundred meg, so I would imagine 2GB should be ok really. Mind you, if I were building a new machine I think I'd put in at least 4GB just for good measure.

Re: Railworks rec specs?
I'm running VISTA 32bit with 3GB of RAM. I have read that VISTA will recognise up to 4GB, and use something like 3.5GB.
Does anyone think it would be worthwhile getting another stick of 1GB RAM?? would it make a difference?

while having 4GB of ram is a good thing, the 4GB patch everyone speaks off actually has nothing to do with the actual amount of physical ram installed on a system but in fact is related to how much virtual address space is allocated to a program when it is running and for a 32bit program that is approx 2GB for the program and 2GB for the OS.
I am sure someone will come along and correct me if I am wrong

Re: Railworks rec specs?
2GB of RAM not enough? It's all I've got, runs Win7 64bit, and RailWorks like a dream. No problems here

Re: Railworks rec specs?
Thanks guys, it's now as clear as a puddle of muddy water.
One of my main concerns was actually my processor, but as no one has mentioned it so far, can I at least assume I'm safe there? If memory is the only issue, thankfully that can be upgraded relatively cheaply if neccessary. I guess the best way to really know if my pc is good enough is to just try it, (RW2,) when it arrives through the door.

Re: Railworks rec specs?
i used to run
Quad core intel Q6600 2.4ghz
Asus P5KC
4GB DDR2 800MHZ Ram
ATI HD 5770 1GB
Windows 7 ultimate
Now Run
Quad core intel q6600 2.4ghz "But now ramped up to 3.0ghz"
Asus P5KC "Still"
6GB DDR2 800MHZ Ram
ATI 5870 1GB "Better bus ram"
Windows 7 ultimate
And the improvements are stunning on the old specs constant staggering even in low scenery parts
but now the graphics and everything are smooths as i was happy with the new upgrade last month
Memory and graphics card do a lot of justice let alone your CPU i think from my last system

Re: Railworks rec specs?
I'm taking it that it's a second hand pc that is going for a really good price, otherwise I would consider the spec to be a bit below what is the norm for even a moderately priced home desktop these days. The specs for my pc are the same as what I purchased in it over a year ago and even then, it wasn't a pc to set the world alight, (just good enough to run iRacing and the original installation of Rail Simulator).
