Greetings UKTS Users,
I am wondering if i could gain a few moments of your time in resolving an issue which i have recently been experiencing with RailWorks.
I purchased the game via VALVe's Steam client and have been playing it since the early 09x.x versions, however i have an issue with the Railworks Client now, which is preventing it from working.
The situation goes like this. On Monday 20th Sept i was playing Railworks fine, building a new scenario from Paddington to Oxford with a HST. I managed to save that and quit and shutdown for the night. Two days later i tried to launch railworks again, however it just appears in a black window (1600 x 900), with a smaller white rectangle (approx 1380x800px) inside it and the program just hangs. Windows declares it as not responding. After trying a lot of different things to come up with a solution, nothing has fixed the issue.
Even after the new Railworks 2 update, hoping that it would fix the issue, it still hangs in the window and does nothing.
I have tried contacting Railworks Support, however since September, they have not replied to me yet.
Fixes attempted to date:
Running an older version of the game (104.5b - current: 114.0b)
Reinstalling the game via Steam
Running LogMate - Returns nothing
Deleting RailWorksProc2.exe and redownloading that file via Steam
Setting Administrive rights on both Railworks.exe and RailWorksProc2.exe
Reinstalling PhysX (9.0x)
Reinstalling Drivers (Catalyst 10.9)
Running CHKDSK /f - twice
Disabling Windows Themes
Running with different resolution/AA settings
Clearing Blueprint Cache
Disabling Catalyst AI (CrossfireX)
Underclocking graphics card
Underclocking CPU
Removing third-party addons and plugins
None of these have returned anything useful, the game still hangs.
For assistance, i will list my system specs:
CPU: Intel i7 860 @ 3.19GHz
RAM: Corsair Dominator GT @ 2x 2GB
Graphics: ATI Sapphire Radeon HD 5970 (dual GPU card, each GPU has the same spec as the 2GB versions of 5870)
Drives: C:\ 160GB Seagate (holds OS)
D:\ 2x 750GB Western Digital in RAID1 array (holds Steam and has been chkdsk'd)
OS: Windows 7600 Ultimate X64 - Last Updated: 20/10/2010
Does anyone here have any suggestions or ideas of fixes to help me with my problem with the program?
Regards, Zion ^^

Re: Railworks Won't Start
I had some odd problems with the RailWorks launcher since the big update.
Though the problems I had might be different than yours and perhaps not related, here's a link with some information about how I fixed the problems I was having. Might be worth a try:

Re: Railworks Won't Start
For some arbitrary reason it decided to work this morning. My partner tried running it on his machine (they're next to one another) from my copy of Railworks and it worked. He deleted it and redownloaded it through my Steam Account, and it worked. When i logged back into Steam on my system and ran Railworks, it worked, but i bet you anything that it will stop working the next time i shut the machine down...
I believe that it's still not fixed, so I'm still up for taking suggestions. I have no idea why it just randomly started working. >.<

The one thing you don't seem to have tried previously is to verify the Steam cache. There was an update released last night which might have fixed the critical files in the process, but you should still verify the cache to pick up any remaining problems.
The key to knowledge is not to rely on others to teach you it.

The process of this is by restarting steam and verifing the game cache.ZionFox wrote:Deleting RailWorksProc2.exe and redownloading that file via Steam
I guess i'll just see if it starts working again after the next reboot.

Re: Railworks Won't Start
Tried it again today, and it's not working again.
I've noticed that no Source engine games work either, they all just hang.
Half-Life: Source
Half-Life: Deathmatch: Source
Half-Life 2
Half-Life 2 Lost Coast
Half-Life 2: Deathmatch
Half-Life 2: Episode 1
Half-Life 2: Episode 2
Garry's Mod
Team Fortress 2
Portal
They all just hang when i launch them. Yesterday when Railworks worked, i was playing SMOD Tactical Delta (a mod for Half-Life 2) and it was working fine. Today it just locks up...
All other games work fine.

Re: Railworks Won't Start
Do you have a Windows System Restore checkpoint you could roll-back to that was before things went kablooey for you?
Worth a try perhaps.
