Hi,

I downloaded the 9 files at and around your N43E117 from ASTER DEM.
They arrived taking the form ASTGRM_N43E117_dem.tif.

If you can write a trivial program, all that is needed to convert them to the HGT files that RW use is to:
a) skip the first 8 bytes.
b) copy the next 3601x3601x2 = 25934402 bytes.

and like magic you have the file in HGT format.

So there is no requirement to do any fancy conversions to and from Lat/Longs and distances in metres.

I did a quick look at the N43W117 file. I found nothing obviously bad from the histogram of values, and all the boundaries match the boundaries of the 4 adjacent files.

Longbow: I have the files, so if you cannot do the conversion, send me a PM and we will try and find a way of getting the files to you, if you like.

All the best

Colin
