DEM data and Something bad happened...

Post by vlado960 »

I tried to trace a route and error occurs when I press T and RailWorks goes down. Always on the same place. In particular, the transition between two blocks (Lat. 44.99223 and Lat. 45.01227) It's fine on both sides. On one side 150 km, and on other side 50 km.

This tends to happen if you use the higher quality DEM from the NASA site and I believe has been an ongoing bug from RS days. It seems there is an issue using other than 3 arc/sec (60 or 90m DEM) at certain latitude boundaries. The workround is to swap out the higher quality DEM in the SRTM folder for the 90m stuff at the boundary, then when you've done the tiles either side of the line put the 30m back in. You may get a slight ridge or join which will need to be smoothed manually but that's the only solution unless you're working in an area covered by the third party Redem. DEM handling in RW is a constant gripe of mine and really after nearly three years there's no excuse for not having fixed the programme crashes when using high-res SRTM - plus adding support for other DEM formats (such as TIFF or BIL) which can be downloaded seamlessly or adding a means of smoothing voided (holey) data.

BIL= HGT the difference is just the file name, and one have big endian data in it, other have little endian. The biltosrtm can convert it.
My top wishes: Realistic engine physics - Superelevation - Multi-core support - Remove Physix engine, and use better one

As I may have mentioned before, whenever I've used BIL2SRTM (after healing the hgt in Microdem and re-saving) instead of voids the output data has created huge spikes and towers, at least that's how they manifest in the sim. Again still only a stopgap to the facilities that ought to be in the core product by now to assist serious route builders.

Could be a long wait given the current track (ha!) history of progress in this area...

However do make sure you log the issue at the support email address otherwise it will likely end up in the limbo of issues they know very well exist (via the forums), but get a convenient strop on that nothing has been reported "officially" as a bug.

The answer came very fast. They asked me for problematic DEM data, so I sent them.

You're going to see your hair getting white before .....
If this bug hasn't fixed after almost 3 years yet, I suspect it was too hard to fix and they the gave up.

I don't know is it humor or not, but today I tried again. It's OK now. Perhaps they repaired it via Steam.
