:o

I'm not into US Steam, but man is that video impressive! Fantastic smoke/steam effects and a great impression of pure power.
Nice one Paul.

I would like to nicely ask Sly if he can reconsider the amount of gravity on that smoke. It's a little unnatural looking. I mean, it can happen in some rare circumstances but... It looks Donald Trumps hair. :)

Looks good otherwise Sly. Great job.

Hi Paul,

Not a great lover of US Railroads, but must say that your Big Boy really does look and sound the business.

I have only seen video's of the Big Boy (never in 'real' life), but your model does it justice in every respect as far as I can see, extremely well done.

Just one thing, any chance that the Dub-Dee can be made to the same standard, pretty please.

Same here, not a US fan, not even Steam for that matter but I do know when I see a quality locomotive. :D

Yeah great work there sly! But i'd have to say that footage i've seen of steam in the US shows masses of steam and smoke being rocketed high into the air. If you could achieve something like that this'll be AMAZING!!

Bill, Matt

I can put whatever amount of smoke out .. but unfortunately my computer(s) and probably most other peoples, would not be able to run it.

Always a fine line about how much to put in .. some will love the way smoke drifts and clings the whole way down the train and some will prefer a more normal approach.

The Big Boy is likely to be released with this long lasting smoke trail, but I will very quickly put out an option patch for those that wish for it.

This is Amazing! I can't wait til its released! But why is the valve gear still out of position? I'd thought that'd be fixed since the release of the Challenger. To better understand on what I mean, have a look at this of an actual Big Boy.

Thanks for the reply Sly. Having an option to download a 'smoke stack up to the heavens' patch would be wonderful. I have no doubt that you try all the options and it must be a difficult decision which way to go!

Anyway great work anyway.

Cheers

Hi

In what way is the valve gear out of position ?

If you mean that the front engine rods are not in the same position as the rear .. that is intentional and entirely realistic. :D
It is my interpretation that this gives added visual apperance.

There is no link between the front and rear locomotives, and if the discussion is about sync betwen the two locomotives .. they are in sync but that does not mean the wheel positions have to be the same ... they are 90 degree synched. in other words the power strokes match.

If you are refering to the fact that actually there is no quartering between the left and right side wheels..
I make no apology for chosing a simpler method of construction and animation that uses substancially fewer resources... you can't see both sides of the locomotive at the same time.
I would much sooner use the resources to actually animate the motion in forward gear.. something that I believe is still unique to myself in Railworks :D

Cheers

Did I spot a headlite with a projecting beam, or do I need new glasses?

sly, that's good then having a separate optional smoke modification. Variety is a good thing! Thank you.

As far as the topic of the light. The light appears to be the same kind of light element used in the IHH yard lamps and some other platform lights. I sort of like how it was subtly used on the dash 9 to cast some light around the train. This video is kind of hard to tell how this will look in broad daylight with clear skies and no haze but I don't like the visible V shape lines of the beam. Many people love the fake lighting though so I know I'm in the minority here and can always just turn off the light. :)

Hi Bill

I have made the lightcone a child object of the Front Frames.

This is a compromise.. it means it can't be switched on and off .. but it is very easy to remove.

The child object is merely removed from the front frames bin file .... or I can issue another optional patch if enough interest.

Cheers
