It does in the main run reasonably well of course, but if I try to set FSAA higher than 4x multisampling or if I enable vsync I get to Stutter City pretty fast (leaves seem to be a major killer, winter = smooth).

One of my setups uses the exact same specs, i7 975 and an ATI 5870. Unless you are trying to run RailWorks with SuperSampling AA applied you should have no problem running 8xAA with the 5870.
I get small stutters on my new i7 930 and Radeon 5870. And yesterday? I used to get them on my E8600 and GF 285... :D

Hi, I have tried 8xMS and many other permutations and don't have any problem as such; RW just has a tendency to stutter a little more than with 4xMS. :)

Unless you’ve got other issues going on setting the AA higher than 4x Multi-Sampling as rabid described has nothing to do with the stutters in RailWorks. The stutters are due to the way the RailWorks game engine uses system resources and loads scenery.

My point was that RW stutters, slightly, regardless of my hardware and regardless of any specific settings. Oh, to be in your apparent utopia :D

Read again carefully, I said the stutters in RailWorks are do to the way the game engine handles the scenery loading and shouldn't have anything to do with how the 5870 handles AA.

With the i7 975X/980X and the 5870 or GTX 480 yes it is PC gaming "utopia", lol..

I read all your posts very carefully, rest assured 8)

Anyway, back to the patch in question. I am finding it totally amazing that this really is a miracle cure for so many people. How could the existence of the file be such a well-kept secret, I wonder?

Who said it was a “well-kept secret”? Many have been using it to cure out of memory errors with add-ons for FS2004 for a very long time now, it's nothing new.

But it only became more useful in the last few years as 32bit programs began to hit the 2gb limit.

Dear me, are you always deliberately this contrary with everyone? :D

I was referring to the world of UKTS and this forum, rather than anything else. Additionally, it was a turn of phrase rather than to be taken verbatim.

Phew.

Let's just play RailWorks, shall we?

I makes no difference whatsoever, at least as long as your humble servant is concerned, from where this came, since it has blessed me with the possiblity of running Ally's scenarios for W&B at the highest graphic settings, for which I wholeheartedly thank you, kind Sirs ;)

Just a question. Sorry if it has already been answered. Will Steam wipe this out when it updates Railworks as I usually always play in online mode.
Kind regards James.

Hi James, if you do a verify cache it probably will and until RSC amend the file themselves then it will be overwritten and you would need to reapply it.

Hi, if RSC modify the programme to suit the 64 bit crowd, how will it affect us running 32 bit versions of the operating system?

It shouldn't but it is something that is usable on a 32bit system as well if and only if the user makes a change to the USERVA setting of windows 32bit.

Have heard several mentions of this userva patch but no idea what it is or what it does! Perhaps the techie talk could be explained please - & not by being refered to a hardware forum :)
