Windscreen wipers, why were they added, they're useless!!

Post by amigawolf »

Hi,

Dunno if this has been talked about before, did a quick search but couldn't find anything on the subject of why they were included in the game, the devs even went to the trouble of making them work even though there's no graphic effect of raindrops or snow flakes hitting the windscreen when falling leading to an obcscured view until the wipers were used.

Could this feature be added in a future patch, that would add even more realism into the game.

It has been discussed, at length, it generally brings on the BVE drivel. :D

The best things come to those who wait  We're being blessed with traffic interaction at crossing shortly if you haven't been following the Facebook discussion, so 'interactive rain' ala BVE is hopefully somewhere in the to-do pile for RS.Com... along with superelevation, etc... [wistfully mutters off into the distance things he'd like to see in the sim...]

'You can't please all of the people all of the time'. I remember when MSTS came out the big complaint was that although you could use the wipers and see them working from outside the train, you could not see them from inside the cab.

Now they work fine and are visible from both inside and outside but still there are complaints. Sometimes you just can't win....

Hi

Hi Everyone
Yes I agree people are entitled to ask for things to be included etc
It could have been phrased better though
I personally like the fact the wipers can be viewed working both inside and outside the cab
Unfortunately You cannot please people all of the time
Kind regards Stephen

Wipers are not relevant for my RW experience. I never switch them on.

I agree. At this time they are just a distraction and utterly pointless. However it would be fantastic if they served a purpose (ie; washing rain). I guess there is a number of approaches that RSC could take to achieve this; one would be the use of a custom shader and the other would be the use of random quads that fall along the face of the window screen. When the wiper sweep's it simply deletes or hides those quads within range.

A custom shader would probably be the best looking and less performance hit than the quad version - that said, I think it should be possible as long as the gaming engine has some kind of script that tells other systems that it's raining (which it probably does since the rail adhesion changes in different weather conditions, IIRC).

Hi Guys

To answer the original posters query .. they are there because many players wish to see them in operation both internally and externally...... :D

As to wiping raindrops off the screen yes this can be done and have ideed done it, removed from the 20's simply because I didn't think I had quite gotten the most from the tecnique and there were probably better solutions to be had.

I could always drop development work on loco's and spend the next 6 months coming up with a good solution .. which do you think would earn me more money or give most pleasure to users ? :D

yep good to have but it has its place in the scheme of things...

I don't appreciate the sensationalism and implied impression that devs don't know or care ..

Take a step back and realise that you will never get everything in any sim, there was no need for the OP to be negative ...

Influence is more likely to come from actions not words

If we had proper rain on the windscreen you would have to use them. Hopefully they sort this out

hi

i agree here with amigawolf

we have wipers, but for what?

they should have an direct effect to the driver experience. they should clean the windows from heavy snow, rain....
but then you could also ask: why we have loco lights when they don't lightup the tracks too?
why we have tunnels when they are not dark when you drive through them?

sorry when i go a little bit offtopic, but in the end those questions come to one point.
all those small things make a game more interesting, at least when you play a simulation game.

hi, ..

I op?osite, ...

Can simulate from the Idea that one Drop of Rain on a single pane of glass you should prefer to adopt the time being.
Perhaps then, the Drop was still flowing down.

The PC computer for such computing tasks rather weak.
In a railway simulation must be calculated very much, as simulated raindrops flow and its consistency would only slow down the computer.
Or is it in your garage has room for a Deep Blue.

The Windshield wipers are always on the Biskuit with personally  ... so I let it run only in the exterior View.
I would rather they would built a little higher quality poly mesh.
Sometimes there are more black bars.

Its like me saying why do we have darkness in out tunnels
or random dirt added to a train. Or lights on all of our trains :o
And so on and so on.

But then i think.
We cant have everything. :o
