Three weeks ago I had to take to my sick bed due to a bout of the dreaded lurgi. Prior to that, Railworks was running hunky dory on my set up.
Now I'm back and on booting up, Railworks updated itself and nothing has worked since. Every default route I try to load, I get the bong and the something bad has happened message when I Ctrl/Alt/Del to get back to the Railworks start page.

Today I deleted Railworks from my computer completely and reinstalled from the DVD. No other routes or assets were installed ecept the default ones and hey presto, It's still doing it. What gives?

Something bad did happen allright and Railworks doesn't.

Dump files have been sent but no joy yet.

Hi your not alone I got a problem a few days ago thats very similar, I start the game no problem, when I click on a loco to drive it 'bong' and the "something bad.." message, I tried verify cache, no joy, I deleted railworks and re downloaded from steam, no joy and I've just deleted all content, railworks, steam, virus guard and then re downloaded steam and railworks... no improvement... i too have sent a dmp file to rail sim support site heard nothing yet..... what has happened... any help gratefully recieved

If when you click on a loco and it crashes, that usually points to the physiX software either not being installed properly or needs updating. That should be the first thing to try.

Cheers... it was the physx driver... should have come here for advice before I started messing about deleting stuff, but I don't like to complain on this site as there are too many people ready to knock railworks..

I have just downloaded and installed the latest Driver for my graphics card which included physiX. I ran Railworks with physiX enabled and disabled, that's all you can do in the nVidia control panel, both had the same effect i.e still got the bong and couldn't load any scenario in any route.

Where should physiX be installed? I would have thought it would be automatically installed in the right location during the installation process.

I'm not knocking Railworks but if it worked without problems before the upgrade and now it is not, there must be a problem somewhere.

Your problem doesn't sound like it is related to the physx driver. I think you should via the steam client verify the integrity of the game files cache, redo the launcher settings for resoultion etc and clear the blueprints cache and then try running the game again. Something has obviously been mucked up somewhere either in the update or the reinstall you did.

I had a Physx issue the other week as detailed here.

It was necessary to download the latest driver package from Nvidia directly, UNINSTALL the existing Nvidia driver suite, then restart and install the new package. Worked a treat for me.

In my case, the issue seemed to be because of (against my own better judgment) my decision to allow Microsoft Update to apply new video drivers. Don't know why I chose that path as I've always updated them manually in the past; I guess it was a brain fart moment

I have done all that you suggested, god knows the number of times I have verified the integrity games cache, the last time it said the files were complete.

Ran OTTOs Del Pak batch file which cleared a couple of blueprint files in the Kuju folder. Changed the resolution backwards and forwards.

Upshot of all that. No change. Still get the 'something bad has happened' etc etc followed by 'RailWorkProc2.exe has encountered a problem'

Am I cheesed off. You bet I am.

Anyways I am away from my big Railworks computer till Monday morning, Wifey banned me from going anywhere near it Fri/Sat/Sun, but I am alowed to use the laptop for communicating. Oh lucky me.

By any chance do you have a earlier backup of the steamapps or railworks folder ? Have you tried updating directx ? Did you install ( or windows ) install any other updates ?

hi.. I couldn't get the latest physx driver to work.. Had to use one of the older versions, sorry i can't tell you which as i'm away from my machine.. Hope this helps, i know how frustrating these issues can be...andy

Now on backup # 6 using RWTools which I am sure I did before the update and I still have #s 5,4,3 on my drive D. I don't think RWTools backs up the entire Railworks folder from what I can remember, only the Assets and Content folders within the main folder and a few other bits and pieces.

Should I copy and paste backup #6 to c:/../../../common/Railworks and overwrite and see what happens turning off update in Steam?

I don't allow Windows to update itself unless it's done something I don't know about and my recent purchases were the Class 45 pack DLC and the CN Widenose pack DLC.

I think I have the latest directX but I will check on Monday.

Check to see what the system thinks you have...

Open the Nvidia control panel applet and click on the "System Information" link circled in red, here:

(Alternatively, you can click on the "Help" menu option, then choose the "System Information" option)

Then, click the "Components" tab, circled red, here:


PhysX driver version is boxed out here in red. Current version is as shown.

Hi all!

Since my last Steam-update I have the same problems with RailWorks as described above. Whenever starting a scenario or choosing a loco in free roam mode the sim crashes and I get the "something bad has happened" message.

I have tried to install new drivers, rolled back drivers, switchen user control panel on/off, run RailWorks in compatibility mode (Vista SP2), made sure I have the latest PhysX driver installed, did a complete re-install of RailWorks (including cache), uninstalled all the 3rd part add-ons and tried to re-set all the graphics and sound settings.

I have Railworks version 104.5b, run it as administrator and my system specs are:

- Intel Core 2 DUO E6600 2.40GHz Dual Core CPU Overclocked to a minimum of 2.93GHz
- Intel 975X (Socket LGA775) PCI-Express DDR2 Motherboard
- Corsair 2GB PC2-6400 CAS4 (2x1GB) Dual Channel Kit (Overclocked at 900MHz+)
- NVIDIA 8800 GTX 768MB GDDR3 VIVO HDTV/Dual DVI (PCI-Express) DirectX 10 Graphics Card
- Microsoft Vista Premium (32bit)

Nothing has worked so far and I have reached the end of my wisdom (and patience)

Has anyone found a cure yet?

Finally got Railworks to run this morning after a complete uninstall, ensuring that no trace of Railworks or Steam was on the h/d. Yet another time consuming install and the downloading and installing of the separate physX driver from the nvidia site and using the delete blueprint button from the Tools/Docs button in the Railworks start menu finally seems to have cured my problem.

Which one of those was the cause of all the hassle I don't know but I ran a scenario from Oxford to Paddington and York/Newcastle without any problems this morning.

The Raildriver still doesn't work (it did before) but at least I can use the keyboard.

I hope this is of some help Stefan, and I hope we don't get another Railworks update anytime soon if this is the result

Tried to run railworks tonight and have encountered the same problem as described above with something bad always happening when loading scenarios. I upgraded my n.videa drivers earlier in the week and this is the first time I have tried to run the game since.
I am currently running through most of the procedures described above such as verifying the game files and re- installing older drivers. I do not have a local backup. That'll learn me. Next step I guess will be a re download and install.

I am at my wits end with this. I have been really happy with this sim and so far have found it to be very stable. I still have my MSTS install and really would hate to have to go back to it.
