Real railways are noisy!
One thing I would like to see improved in RW is the sound of steel wheels on rail.
When you watch a real train pass by there is the assault on the ears that is the noise of the wheels on the rails, squealing, scraping, and rolling along. Something that is brutally absent from RW, but if added would really improve the ambience in the game. OK there is a little squeal in tight bends, but when in "spotter" or external views the trains seem to pass by almost silently as if riding on air.
Would it be possible to improve this with the current version of RW?

Totally agree with you 100%. The sounds in MSTS were much, much better than RW. I just can't understand why they are so poorrabid wrote:One thing I would like to see improved in RW is the sound of steel wheels on rail.

Re: Real railways are noisy!
Its possible to alter default stock sounds to make them sound exactly like in MSTS/BVE since the audio engine behind RW is very powerful but it demands someone with good audio sources/enough time/basic knowledge of blueprints to do it.
Should someone want to try making better sounds and there is no suitable raw sound available I can offer my own field recordings until I have enough time to try it on my own:
http://hissi.kuvat.fi/aanet/junat/Tavar ... Sp_Hbi.mp3 - a freight train with log waggons and few box cars driving 90 km/h.
http://hissi.kuvat.fi/aanet/junat/IC10_ ... ainola.mp3 - a passanger train driving 140 km/h
http://hissi.kuvat.fi/aanet/junat/S7_Tapavainola.mp3 - Our version of ETR-460 Pendolino driving 140 km/h.

Re: Real railways are noisy!
Yeah, but to be fair MSTS straight out of the box lacked realistic sounds as well. IRC didnt it take 3rd party add-ons, freeware etc. to improve things?rabid wrote:Totally agree with you 100%. The sounds in MSTS were much, much better than RW. I just can't understand why they are so poor
There is a great freeware file on TS-com for freight cars with trucks (bogeys) complete with enhanced flange squeal that will make your ears bleed
Cheers

As far as I remember the default sounds in MSTS were pretty dire.
I'm sure 10 years on we can do better.

Re: Real railways are noisy!
Quite true about the default MSTS sounds, I had forgotten how bad they were, but I would have expected the sounds for RW to be as good as some of the excellent freeware sounds for MSTS. The trouble is that unless the sounds are updated by RWC, any third party add ons get wiped at every update!sundog wrote:Yeah, but to be fair MSTS straight out of the box lacked realistic sounds as well. Re: Real railways are noisy!
it is possible to create your own track bed rumble i think its just a case no ones bothered to, it not like its not possible in RW
remember the creators of RW have to think of the masses and i dont think everybody would want all that noise, therefore i think it comes down to creators to create what they want
cheers

Or the chaps at RS.com to roll out another lovely update with real world protipcal sounds.SaMa1 wrote:Its possible to alter default stock sounds to make them sound exactly like in MSTS/BVE since the audio engine behind RW is very powerful but it demands someone with good audio sources/enough time/basic knowledge of blueprints to do it.
Ofcause you couldn’t record every wagon with every load and so on but recordings of wagons and coaches of veering axle's would be great and even co-co sounds would just be fab.
I can see a new signature coming along

If enhanced sounds came directly from RW maybe they could be controlled from the control panel - like the master and ambient sound sliders? Just a thought anyway. I reckon if these came as DLC I reckon it would probably become their biggest seller!

Re: Real railways are noisy!
I mean, where did they get that uncoupling sound from? I've never heard rolling stock sound like a gun shot when it's uncoupled!!!!!

Re: Real railways are noisy!
Current RW default track clicking sound is like radio static, hardly a real train. It can't be that difficult to have good sounds with perhaps a volume option so that individuals can have the level that they'd like.

Re: Real railways are noisy!
I imagine the problem with the coach bogie sounds is because the files have to be one bogie noise for each joint (that makes absolutely no sense i know).
I tried it myself and found that even when i used my file that it was still 0.3-5 seconds long and it sounded no better.
I have always been the first to critiscise bad sounds,as we know, but on this occasion i will stand by RSC as this is very difficult to setup.

Re: Real railways are noisy!
I would recommend purchasing the replacement sound packs from the Armstrong Powerhouse; they will make the locomotive / carriage noises sound convincingly realistic - especially their HST sounds. Unfortunately they won't replace the slightly odd coupling sounds, or the muffled rail joints. But the difference on hearing an HST roar past is really quite astonishing.
