Small Injector?
Hey all,
The Small injector...(I have yet to figure out what that does).
I've been looking half the day for what the "small injector" is for.
If I leave the water valve open, but the injectors closed, water leaves the tender...so where does it go?
I find it odd, that water is leaving the tender, but apparently not entering the boiler. (cuz, the injector is off)...wonder where its leaking too,...the ground?
Still can't get to grips on what the Small Injector does. (other then lower boiler pressure).
I'm trying to find any info on this I can. (there is nothing in any manual I have about it, other then how to turn it off and on).
Apparently its vital to steam operations.(but I'm clueless). It doesn't seem to do anything other then lower boiler pressure. (WHAT is it injecting?).
Anybody know?
I'm in expert mode, with auto-fireman off.
Any ideas?...or is this normal?
Thanks,

Re: Small Injector?
Hey
It is the Small Ejector not the Small Injector, basically what it does it maintain the vacuum level in the braking system from small leaks. But since Railworks does not simulate small leaks in the brake pipes
, it does not really have any point.
It can also create a vacuum although very very slowly (if you put the brake into running and openning the small ejector) , so it is near pointless for that aswell.
The control to operate it is "J".
And Yes if you leave the water valves open without either the live or exhaust injector the water just gushes out onto the tracks
Hope this helps
Also another thing Railworks does not simulate is the Large ejector
, which virtually all steam engines have, basically what the large ejector does is to create a vacuum releasing the brake, but railworks like msts uses the release setting on the brake valve, which virtually no steam engines have sept engines with dreadnought vacuum brake systems, but then thats because the large ejector is built into the handle ( here i go again
)
Regards Edward

Re: Small Injector?
AH, HA!,
Thanks Edward!
Problem solved.
Wonder why they put it in the game if its not being used? (or is useless). (I know, I know, don't ask me! Right?).
...now to find where and what "optimal fire levels" are for each engine. Might be in the docs...(I'll have a look).
Thanks again, Metrobus.
PS:Simple question for ya; Why have two injectors? (I know that's what they have *or more maybe, but why model that? I have yet to use more than one injector. (of course I don't let the boiler run dry.)
Also, It would be nice to just leave the water (Pressure?) for the injectors set at a certain rate and then turn on the injector whenever I needed it. As it stands (MSTS had the same issue I think), its just an added step when adding water. (God forbid your using BOTH...then its 4 steps just to add water and 4 separate steps to shut it back off. Seems a bit over modeled in my opinion. I guess it would take some of the fun out of the cab with only one usable knob, so, I guess its just to add a bit of realism for those who like to drive "head in" and use their mouse to play with all the gadgets.
I guess I'm really not bothered so much about having 2 injectors...just the part about having to adjust the (Water amount) every time I use it. Would be nice if that could be set and left on. Maybe I'll just get a mega tender and water the grass all the way home.
Thanks Edward!

Re: Small Injector?
Don't think I've seen it in any manuals anywhere, however, if you're prepared to go delving within the guts of each engine, you'll find that there's a "simulation" file for each loco.Otterbear2 wrote: <snip>
...now to find where and what "optimal fire levels" are for each engine. Might be in the docs...(I'll have a look).
e.g. for the default Black 5, it's:
\Assets\Kuju\RailSimulator\RailVehicles\Steam\5MT_Black5\Default\Simulation\Black5 Engine Simulation.bin
Tucked away within said file is the "IdealFuelMass" variable. On this particular loco, it's set to "1100" (kilograms). A bit of math is then required to convert to pounds (if you're me!) which is 2,425lbs. You can affirm this if you were to throw together a scenario (or use a "free roam") with the Black 5 and hit F5 a couple of times to get the "HUD" display, as this contains a "Fire Mass" reading which always seems to start at the "ideal" mass.
So, you can do a couple of things; trawl through each Simulation file for every one of your steam loco types, find the "ideal" figure and make a note of it, OR, throw together a free roam with each loco type in it and "cab hop" and note the starting mass of the fire from the F5 view.
One uses "live" steam to force water into the boiler, the other uses the draught from the exhaust (sometimes referred to as "dead" steam) to pull water through. The latter only therefore works when the regulator is open and the fire is draughting.PS:Simple question for ya; Why have two injectors? Incidentally, the whole water on/water off/where does it go stuff had me puzzled for a while and like you, I needed to understand where it went if it wasn't into the boiler
It's really good fun once you get the hang of it, too.
Cheers, Rik.

Re: Small Injector?
Does Railworks simulate a very angry PWay man because you've been creating him problems (only if at a stand really!)?And Yes if you leave the water valves open without either the live or exhaust injector the water just gushes out onto the tracks
Re: Small Injector?
Hehe, the '70s era standing driver model, if left to his own devices, e.g. just stood there, always seems quite agitated and frustrated by something...ralph0chadkirk wrote:Does Railworks simulate a very angry PWay man because you've been creating him problems (only if at a stand really!)?And Yes if you leave the water valves open without either the live or exhaust injector the water just gushes out onto the tracks

Re: Small Injector?
I had a small play with the engine file of the Hall add on and managed to get it to only be able to release the brakes when it is in the running position and the small ejetor is open. as it is in real life.

Re: Small Injector?
WOW, great stuff.
Thanks Rik, and Kirkheath.
Thanks for the file info, Rik. I dont think I ever would have found those.
That's kinda what I figured. Was trying to figure out what level to keep the fire at when doing a lot of shuttle work, as the safeties would blow every few dozen seconds.
I open every thing up that leaks steam...
...Cocks, brakes (full off),...probably forgot about turning off the blower...just checking my new route for bugs. I found if I let fire die to about 2000lbs, the constant braking and cocks open keeps the pressures down enough...some times I even have to let it build up again...which is fun, cuz its more realistic.
Not into realism enough yet to mess with the simplified braking system. I kinda like it.
Ok, I'll bite...How do you stop a train if the brakes are in the running position? I imagine you have to change that at some point? Do you leave the small ejector on all the time or do you have to turn it on every-time you set/unset the brakes?
I think I understand. You use the brakes normally, but always put them into the running position when "running". I do this as a matter of practice anyway. (unless, I'm purposefully trying to drain boiler pressure).
I hope they will implement this Small ejector/Running brakes usage, in some later release. I would rather have it on all trains by default...then to have to "hack" every train I get. But, its probably not too hard.
Anybody been able to get the asset editor to work?
I just took a peek at it, and all I get is a blue grid. I can see the pop-outs on the side, but they wont open...and whenever I click on the screen,...it just jumps to my desktop. Really weird.
Windows 7 may be the culprit here.
Thanks again everybody.

Re: Small Injector?
The Asset Editor don't like fullscreen for the preview window: remove the tik by fullscreen and set the Screen Resolution a little bit lower till the 'test display settings' says OK.Otterbear2 wrote: Anybody been able to get the asset editor to work?

Then try again. Then the preview window should be behind the (fullscreen) Blueprint window. A little bit grazy.
Good luck
