Railworks wont load

Post by andyrichrads »

Hi
Bought my son Railworks for xmas, loaded the game on our pc but railworks wont launch. Steam is working ok but when we go to launch Railworks the following error comes up:

RAILWORKS HAS ENCOUNTER A PROBLEM AND NEEDS TO CLOSE. WE ARE SORRY FOR THE INCONVENIENCE.

ERROR SIGNATURE IS: clr20r3 P1:railworks exe P2: 2.0.01 P3: 4aba3681 P4: mscorlib P5: 2.0.0.0 P6 492b834a P:7 198 P8: cb P9: system.io.filenotfoundexception.

I have re-loaded the game but with no luck. My pc meets the game requirements, i have updated all drivers and Directx and i have run Rail Simulator

Can anyone please help

Thanks

Do you get the very first screen, before going in game?

If so, this maybe something as simple as setting your Screen resolution, fullscreen, to that of your desktop.

Have you installed PhysX and Microsoft .NET framework? RailWorks requires both to work. Please note that updating RailWorks itself (done through STEAM) normally cures most problems - anything after that is either a incorrect driver or hardware problem.

One main problem, though, is if you have an ATI/Readheon (or however it's spelt) graphics card - Railworks doesn't seem to support these :bad-words: despite the fact they're in quite a lot of computers. Also note that RailWorks is a 32 bit application - even if you have a larger (e.g. 64 bit microprocessor)

So can you get this Steam screen Andy, and does the status of RailWorks show 100%?:

For the first run, you should launch the game from this screen. This will also set the Directx and Physx programs to run. Rt/clicking Railworks and selecting "Launch Game" should then take you to this:

It would be here that you have to set the screen resolution, before you actually get into the game.

A lot of people are saying that after swapping to an ATI/radeon card RailWorks stops. My computer has an ATI card and RW works fine - it just uses a generic graphics driver which acts as an 'intermediate' driver

Unfortunately, a lot of people do things to thier computer without knowing the first thing about them, but ATI can't be blamed for this. I also run 2 x ATI cards in Xfire with no problems at all.

If, however, you are referring to the misgiuded statement given out whilst running Logmate, then ignore this. It will say this for a great many cards.

If you're swapping from one card "Brand" to another i.e a nVidia based chipset to an ATi based chipset, then you must fully uninstall the old card drivers before even thinking about installing your brand new one. So, boot up computer, uninstall old drivers, turn off computer... Remove old graphics card and insert new one... Turn on computer, boot into windows, go to your new "Brand" website (ATi, nVidia, Maxtrox, Intel, whatever) and get the newest WHQL drivers available, download / install new drivers - REBOOT!

This'll ensure that your new card will not have driver conflicts and will not misbehave in games, etc...

HOWEVER, if you're keeping the same chipset (i.e nVidia) and you're changing between models i.e upgrading from a 8800GTX to something newer such as a GTX295, then you can simply swap cards without needing to uninstall / reinstall new drivers. (Providing your current drivers have support for the new card, which they usually will if you keep up to date with driver releases!).

So if you're using the "Generic Driver", you really should look into downloading the latest ATi CCC drivers so that you're running the card at it's best settings.

Problem solved!!

I took your advice Chris and decided to load Microsoft .NET framework manually from Microsoft website, onloading it gave me the option of repair or re-install so I used repair, restarted my pc and Railworks loads. For reference Im running Microsoft .NET framework 3.5, Railworks version is 2.0 on the disc

Thanks Guys

Please note Andy, that NET 2.0 is a totally separate runtime to other versions, NET3.5 and above.

I can concur that there are no inherent issues with ATI/AMD graphics solutions as opposed to Nvidia...

Just as a point of order (and mild pedantry  ), I'd revise the above advice to download the new WHQL driver pack from the vendor BEFORE you uninstall the old ones, just don't install (or even unpackage) the new ones until the old ones are uninstalled...
