RSDerek: A possible problem with Steam

Post by dipper6 »

Derek, if you read this can you help with this problem with Steam that I got last week and its not rectified yet.

What happened was that I got a route and then I got scenarios for it.
The last scenario I got was about a week ago, among a few other things it required a Class158 from RS (Steam) and
also the double pack of a Barbie and SPT in UKTS 2 Class 158's .
So I attempted to install the Scenario then the assets, all was well untill I installed the Class 158's.

I got errors :-
Consist Builder -Cant Load Rail Vehicle - First Scotrail Class 158 DMSL -no driver
Consist Builder -Cant Load Rail Vehicle - First Scotrail Class 158 DMSL
Consist Builder -Cant Load Rail Vehicle - SPT Class 158 DMSL
Consist Builder -Cant Load Rail Vehicle - SPT Class 158 DMSL - no driver
and two more that are almost the same.

I tried all I could think of to fix it to no avail including that of the programmer.
I looked into the assets in RW when I could not locate the RS Class 158 pay for download.
I got the problem fixed by a programmer whom I contacted about those errors, he told me to download 3 Class 158's
from his website and try them, this I did and the second file worked, this one is a JML Class 158.

I went into Steam to pay for it but it would not let me either pay for or download another
one because I have it, I thought Steam might have made a mistake on this.

Then I remembered you can buy it as a gift for someone so I did just that and I got it for my wife thinking
it would go to her and I'd get the file into my PC. WRONG. That did not work.
So I made a report to Steam via their support explaining the situation about 6 days ago.
Nothing from them yet. I know, its my fault for forgetting I'd paid for the 158, every person this planet forgets something.

What does a person do if he has a download file go corrupt or something or it does not download in a re-installation,
I know the chances are remote but it could happen to someone.

Hi,
Everyone is on holiday. (inc me)
From reading your post it does seem user error rather than a steam problem.
Also, I'm afraid we are not responsible for 3rd party scenarios and reskins.

If your Steam Addon gets currupted in someway then verify integrity of game cache (Right click Railworks in Steam window and click properties and select Local files)

regards

Derek

Hi dipper... I don't really understand what's gone wrong but have you 'verified integrity of game cache' in steam?.. This function checks all your downloads and corrects any errors or replaces any missing files on your computer... I hope you don't find it patronising if I give you the steps to do this
1 Log onto steam
2 Click on my games
3 Right click on Railworks and a menu box appears
4 Select Properties from this box
5 Select local files
6 Select integrity of game cache
Steam then checks and corrects all your local files

Steam also has a very useful backup function which I use (when I remember) before making any significant changes.

Hope this is of some help

Andy

As you can tell I'm not Derek.. but
Consist Builder -Cant Load Rail Vehicle - First Scotrail Class 158 DMSL -no driver
Consist Builder -Cant Load Rail Vehicle - First Scotrail Class 158 DMSL
Consist Builder -Cant Load Rail Vehicle - SPT Class 158 DMSL
Consist Builder -Cant Load Rail Vehicle - SPT Class 158 DMSL - no driver
are not RS.com / SteelixB Class 158 original product assets. I.e they are reskins by a third party..

If the "Maroon & Gold, Green & Black and Blue & Purple" standard unbranded units work fine in the provided class158 pack scenarios, then the problem is with the route / scenario provided by the third party.

I suggest you try to verify the "Game Cache" files - Open 'Steam', goto the "My Games" tab, 'Right Click on Railworks', choose "Properties" and go to the tab called "local files" - Click on the "Verify Integrity of game files"

This will check that your Railworks files are correct and it should also check that your DLC payware items are also properly downloaded and intact. If you want to try re-downloading a particular DLC then go to your "Steam" directory and into the "steamapps" sub-directory, look for the railworks class158.ncf file and delete it. By deleting the .ncf file it'll cause Steam to redownload it.

Hope this helps a bit.. :)

Thanks lads, some good info there, though I did get the problem sorted as I said.
A JML Class 158 fixed it.

I'm about to copy all that and save it for future use, it will no doubt be very helpfull more than once.

Lots of thanks to all of you.

Hiya,

For future reference I though it would be adding that the RailWorks Wiki provides the answer you are looking for. While all the above advice is extremely useful and will assist in solving many problems, the cure for the particular issue detailed can be solved with one button press.
RailWorks Wiki wrote: Q: "Scenario failed to load. Consist builder cannot load rail vehicle..."
A: If this error occurs, please close down RailWorks, and in the Tools & Docs tab of the Launch screen, press the Clear Cache button. Start RailWorks again and launch the required scenario.
Glad you got your problem solved all the same.

Happy New Year

With respect, pressing the Clear Cache button will not resolve issues with missing 3rd party assets, which was the problem in this case.

It will certianly resolve issues if such assets have been installed manually (e.g. by directly copying the files into the RW folders, rather than through the RW Package Manager), but will not help if the assets referred to in the scenario are, indeed, missing.

May I suggest that the wiki could be updated to expand the current answer to state that, if pressing Clear Cache doesn't resolve the issue, then 3rd party content is missing and that the user should double check that they have read the instructions included with the scenario carefully or contact the scenario's author for assistance.

Derek & Adam,
This is a better explanation of the problem I was asking you, if you could do something about it is your RS Class 158 that I have now paid for twice in Steam, not the Class 158 that I got elsewhere.

I looked into the assets in RW when I could not locate the RS Class 158 pay for download.
So I decided that there must be something gone wrong somewhere but I'd pay for it again so that I could get the scenario to work.

I went into Steam to pay for it but it would not let me either pay for it or download another
one because I have it, I thought Steam might have made a mistake on this.

Then I remembered you can buy it as a gift for someone so I did just that and I got it for my wife thinking
it would go to her and I'd get the file into my PC. WRONG. That did not work.

If you have paid for it previously, then Steam will consider this to be part of your default inventory, so a rebuild or "verify integrity" will get your item back for you.
