Anyome tried the payware stuff

Post by johncas »

Anyone tried the payware stuff like the class 08 shunter ( thats what im intrested in ) or the GWR Hall loco are they worth buying as at £10 for a loco it's a bit much to keep buying them everytime you see one you want and buy a few and you have spent more than you paid for the game.

I like the class 08 shunter but don't wan't to fork out the £10 if it's not a good model.

I have most of them, and as Mark says, the 08 and perhaps the 37 are my favourites.

I like the Halls : Here is a little video .. check out the sounds -

Note that the loco name will change to any one of several Hall names at random or you can specify what name you want on the loco by using shed codes.

The 08 is a beauty, if you can afford the price you will not be disappointed with the model.

I have most of the add-ons. UK wise the Hall and the Class 08 are my favorites. I'm sure that when (and if) the Pannier is released it will also become a favorite. Mind you if it's big and green and has the words "Great" and "Western" on it, it automatically goes to the top of my favorites list. (hint hint Railworks :D )
I'm also very partial to the Class 37.

James.

The Hall is very nice. It's a real beauty. It's a bit expensive because there are not too many scenarios added. Also its pity it invokes AWS on routes having AWS. This is a nuisance with steam locs, because you can hear the signal only in cab views, and you don't want to drive a steam engine with only cabview.

out of the steam packs, the 8f and hall have been brilliant packs. i bought the jubilee a few days ago and i have to say im not sure what to make of it. i'm really struggling to get it above 30 mph on the one oxford-paddington scenario. it seems as though it has hardly any pulling power whatsoever, i dont know weather the actual jubilees were like this but it seems as though no matter what im doing, the steam needle is falling. it dosnt seem to be creating steam at all? has anybody else noticed this?

but back on topic that hall is especially good. if you buy it, check it out on the west somerset railway route available on this site. its perfect :P

Personally, and i hate to be harsh but i think the Jubilee was a bit of a flop. No sounds (proper ones) and not really lifelike to be honest. Didn't even do LMS livery, why bother? Hardly used it unfortunately because its just like a reskinned black 5 as it is.

Its a pity,if only it was upgraded to be the same quality of the hall (Right cab, proper sounds etc).

Cheers,
Mark

I have most of the available payware items and on the whole I am very happy with them.

Hi
Its a good question, but if you use the search facility here, you will get a lot more information regarding your question.
IMHO most payware items have been vastly overpriced, the weak area has been with sounds, some of the payware has skimped in this department, and have let down some excellent models very badly, also some have been released with irritating faults, most of them are quite minor, but it gives the impression of being released in a rush, without proper quality control, with freeware this is no problem! but with payware the consumer demands, and should get a quality, and properly completed, and tested item, but overall best value for there money.

Hi,

I'm surprised the Jubilee has not been reskinned in the LMS livery yet.

I have most of the payware add-ons, and I would broadly agree with the consensus of comments here. My personal favourite from the steam era is the Stanier 8F. I have to be honest and say that I'm nothing like so keen on the Hall as most people seem to be, but then again I'm not really a great GWR fan. On the diesel front, the Class 08 is indeed an excellent model, and I'm sure it will not disappoint if you decide to purchase.

If you have any interest in US outline, the SP&S Northerns and the Challenger are, in my view, well worth the money. The only add-on where I would say 'I wish I hadn't bought that' is the Colton & Northern route. Don't get me wrong, it's a high quality piece of work in many ways, but it probably proved to me that fictional routes are just not my thing.

I love the Hall seeing as I'm very attached to the real thing, I can tell the sounds are good (whistle is very loud :D ) and the cab is right, though I remember someone saying the brake operates in the wrong direction and yes, the AWS is a bit annoying - tried the Push or Perish scenario and it ground to a stop after the first ramp. Couldn't get her moving. Works better on older routes.

The 8F sounds very nice and looks the part.

I too have problems with the Jubilee as regards speed, might have been my steady driving first time round but on one scenario (think it was indeed on Oxford Paddington) I ended up being over an hour late. I have a feeling the chuff sounds are more custom than others thought though when compared to the Black 5.
