And can you blame them...... because I can't.
Why should they pay good money to be preached at, its outrageous.
And why should we have to tolerate a game of football, where the fans of one team sing
IRA terrorist songs ?
You wouldn't like it if you had lost friends & family to an IRA bomb.
A bit off thread...... and I don't really do football, but I gather its standard form for football fans to sing songs to taunt the opposing fans.
I do remember a song about Scunthorpe, from the seventies.... which cannot be repeated here...

I don't really do football either, and yes I remember the song about Scunthorpe too.
But that is not the same as singing an IRA song at a football match on Rememberance Day.
C'mon John, surely you can see the point being made, it's not just the lack of silence that's
showing disrespect to all who died in 2 world wars & other conflicts, it's the fact that they
chose to sing an IRA song. This shows that it was aimed at the dead, not the opposing teams fans.
All I know is that in the earlier world wars men and women died to allow us to have this free and frank discussion on line. No totalitarian state would tolerate such comments as made here.
Whatever we think of the rights and wrongs the majority of those who voted in elections have "asked" a government to make decisions on our behalf - this is our version of democracy. History alone will "decide" whether this decision was right or wrong.
Starting to wish I hadn't started the thread now. I did so because I found the minutes silence on Saturday very moving. A full stadium, a local derby which are always really noisy affairs and indeed this one was a noisy affair but for that minute there was complete and utter silence.
I can see where jon is coming from but I don't agree about remembrance day. I think its right we remember the men who died in conflicts even if its to try and instil the horror that is war, the fact that so many do die, I always hope that the silence might help concentrate minds to prevent it happening.
As for Celtic fans singing IRA songs. I love football but sectarianism is part of the Scottish game I detest. Every time we played either Celtic or Rangers we would hear those songs. I remember on one occasion at East End Park we were playing Rangers and we also had the Red Card against Racism before the game. The announcer read out a statement which condemned racism AND sectarianism. We were asked to point out to police or stewards any fans who indulged in sectarian or racists chanting. Within a minute of kick off Rangers fans were singing the Billy Boys song words of which I couldn't post on a family forum but its highly sectarian. I pointed this out to members of Fife Constabulary only to be told that as it was happening in another part of the ground they couldn't do anything. I said they could radio that there had been a complaint. I was to be quiet (the actual wording can't be posted either) or i'd be removed from the stadium. Celtic fans of course singing IRA songs at games is particularly despicable. What also infuriates me is they always ask which one you prefer. Celtic fans I know are convinced thats because i'm a Church of Scotland elder then I must be a Rangers fan. Of course its nonsense, the only other club I have any interest in is West Ham and thats because I lived in Manor Park for a time. I support local teams, religion should have no place in football IMO.
So the Celtic fans singing IRA songs during the minutes silence is a very different thing from normal football wind ups, its much more sinister

The only sad thing is there is no God, so its all really silly.
I appreciate that the Celtic fans were possibly on some strange sectarian rant.... but similar has happened in other stadiums.
I think MU fans made a lot of noise over a Bill Shankley tribute.... or something.
You cannot make people respect things they do not respect.
The point I'm sticking to is a 2 minute silence is for those that want it.... in a church yard or even maybe a barracks.
Trying to impose it on a football crowd, is a very very silly mistake to make.
I don't find the singing of IRA songs as particular sinister, I wouldn't view it as a smear on anyone individual.
There were as many Catholic serving personal killed in NI as protestant, in recent history.
I've served with both, without any judgement .... people are free to believe in Father Christmas for all I care.
I don't suppose many Celtic fans even understand what they are singing about.
