Swansea to London Paddington

Post by jjules »

(Before I start, I wish to make it known I am not the builder of this route, which you'll be glad to know. The author of it asks that his identity is not revealed yet, until the route is released.)

Swansea to London Paddington is in production for BVE!

Yes, one of the best lines in the GW region is finally being recreated for BVE drivers! Currently, work is at Swansea on the route, evidence of this being seen by myself. Early development shows promise of a great route once scenery is in place!

Here are two early shots of development work (which I can be proud to say that I am one of the only people to have seen this work!):

To add my own opinions on this route:

The route shows a lot of promise, and looks like a fantastic start. The only niggle I have with it is that the signal heads are very different in real life, and the trackwork needs to be altered in places.

Otherwise a brilliant start!

I suspect I do not need to tell you too much about the route. Everyone I suppose knows the way it takes from London to Swansea, but I will confirm this:

The line runs from London Paddington to Didcot Parkway, from which it goes to Swindon and Bristol Parkway. Not long after Bristol Parkway is the Severn Railway Tunnel, a marvel of engineering, much like the 43s which run through it hourly during the day. After reaching Welsh territory, the line goes on to Maindee West Junction, where the line to Manchester is met, as is the line which avoids Newport from the North. The next stop is Newport, where the line continues onto Cardiff Central. Bridgend, Port Talbot Parkway, Neath and Swansea all come next, Swansea being where this line ends. There are quite a few small stations along the way from Cardiff to Swansea, and I'd imagine the route author will include these too, so as to allow for running of stopper services along the Swansea to Newport section of the line.

The author assures me the Severn Railway Tunnel will be quite realistic, pitch black inside without the train's headlights on. The length of the tunnel will be the best way to measure its accuracy, being over 4 miles long.

Anyway, enough of me talking about my 2nd favourite line ever. I will leave you to make your own opinions on the route thus far.

More information that I have been requested to pass on:

Once this route is complete, the author intends to move on from Swansea to Fishguard Harbour. Another feature of the route will be new sounds from the HST sets, including the whinging sound that is emitted by a number of carriages.

Services that run on the route are as follows:

1) Swansea to London Paddington - 43s
2) Carmarthen to London Paddington (from Swansea initially) - 43s
(3) removed due to an idiotic thing I did
4) Cardiff Canton to Nottingham - 170s (the drive starts from Canton, where you drive to Central) (as far as Newport)
5) Cardiff Central to London Paddington - 180s
6) Bristol Temple Meads to London Paddington (from Swindon) - 43s and 180s.

Very nice route indeed. Although, how is the massive 200 or so miles of track going to work on BVE? Surely a route like this with light un-complex scenery is going to be a bit of a frame-eater on even some of the best computers?

That's no problem...just split the route to a realistic timetable: Swansea-Bristol Parkway-Swindon-Reading-Paddington.
I REALLY look forward to this route. This is my 'local' line.
Well done to the author, please give us this great route...no-matter how long we have to wait.
Now just stop 'mythering' the guy, and let him get on with it :-)

Well, it's obvious who the author really is since he has posted screenshot of this route himself and another giveaway is that First HST he's using.

As much as I'd like to be able to say I am building this route, I am not.

It would appear a giveaway, what with the use of 43002 in it, in my favourite livery. Also, I was passed on the information from one of my friends who IS building the route.

I personally cannot wait for progress shots, hopefully I'll be in receipt of these soon.
