Question about trigger instructions

Hey guys,
Not looked at creating scenario in a good while. I noticed that Trigger instructions can be used, and one of them is a emergency brakes application. What I would like to know, is can this be triggered automatically by passing a certain point or does it require the play to manually do an emergency stop?
I would like to re-create an instance like with the JT Voyagers/Meridian faults when a fault happens and then the train stops - if so, does this need to be done using LUA scripting?
The loco in use if that matters would be a default class 47 or an Oovee Class 57
