Apologies to ask one extreamly stupid question. Is there actually a real place called Glencoe? - Yes I did geography at school. But didn't get on well with it though :P

Ah, but did you take history? Glencoe is one of the most famous (and infamous!) glens in the Scottish Highlands: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Glen_Coe

Yes it is a real place. If you read the PDF that is installed to the manual directory you can read about the history of the route and why the West Highland Line ended up being built instead (which takes a route further inland).

the route is modelled using the route of current roads and buildings, if you run it in edit mode turn on google maps and you can see the real scenery overlaid.

You should go! The West Coast of Scotland is incredibly beautiful, one of the reasons i chose the route.
