Is it possible to split a route into shorter ones?

Post by trainsmit »

Some routes are huge. The Northern Europe route for instance.
Usually shorter routes needs fewer resources and are more playable/drivable in scenarios.
I would like to split NE into 4 or 5 seperate routes:

Helsingoer-Malmoe
Cph-Esbjerg/Flensburg
Cph-Randers
Cph-Roedeby/Gedser
Cph-Holbaek/Kalundborg

But how can it be done without too much trouble?

Not without some trouble. But it can be done, in contrast to merging routes that were developed independently.

NE may not be a good use case to try the techniques first time.

Anyway, what you do is basically this:
  • Clone the original route, and to the next steps on the clone.
  • Fly around in world editor and note the boundaries of what stays in terms of tile coordinates. You find them in the bottom line.+ or - followed by 6 digits, two times. Flying around will give you a good idea of the directions in which the numbers increase (north and east, I believe).
  • In the route folder (of the clone) go to subfolder Terrain and delete all the tiles not needed. Fly again in world editor to check whether you got the boundaries right. If you delete too much, get the missing files form the original.
  • Repeat for folders Scenery and MixMap.
  • Best delete the whole Scenarios folder. The chance to find a not corrupted scenario there is minimal.
  • In world editor, delete track by growing a circle by dragging the mouse (left button pressed). Take care that you always select double slips as a whole and that you don't delete track that is linked to not yet deleted signals. It might be best to encircle whole stations including their entrance signals. Do the same with block posts, then care about residual trackwork.

Post scripts:
  • Never delete files in Networks/Track Tiles! It is a recipe for disaster.
  • Deleting tile files in Networks/Loft Tiles and Networks/Road Tiles is ok and useful in your case.
  • Manually deleting scenery (using the mouse-drag circle) is possible, of course. I would not want to do it on 3/4 of NE. But you might want to clean a first few kilometres to produce a clear boundary for tile deletion (e.g., a north-south or east-west row of empty tiles).

Thank You, Andi. About as troublesome as I feared. Doable, but.

Meanwhile I have found Jylland 1960, which offers trips from Skagen/Frederikshav-Langaa, on railworks.dk.

Will have to do for now, as my time only permits me recreational scenario creation and driving.
