RWTools electrified

Post by Javiz »

Hi,

With RWTools it seems possible to change electrified track to non electrified. I was wondering, would the other way around, i.e. change non electrified to electrified (overhead) , be possible too ? ( i mean just changing from 'none' to 'overhead' in the trackrule for all track ) I know it can be done via selecting a piece of track in the editor but as RWTools is such a clever proggy i can imagine (hoping) it might be able to help me out here as well.

If i'm lucky and it will indeed prove possible, could someone please point me in the right direction how to do it ?

Thanks so much for any tip/hint ! 8)

cheers,
jan

Please disregard. Found it. 8)

I do have another inquiry though if i may.. : i cannot seem to get the overhead wires to line up with the catenary supports. I have tried the O Gantry tool as well as the S, also other Gantry tools i have in my assets collection. All poles are nicely and quickly placed along the (double) track but the wires just hang there in the air without any support ( or electricity i suppose... my EMU still works though.. :) )

I guess this must be a common problem ?....

Might there be a solution for it other than having to line up each and every set of cantenary poles manually ?

Again thanks much for any tip or hint !

cheers,
jan

Jan,
my first reaction on reading your original post was that it wasn't going to be possible for a variety of reasons, such as how to identify a start and end point for where you wanted the OHLE to be, and how to avoid every bit of track now having OHLE. Since you've found a way to do what you want, could you please give me / us some kind of hint as to what your solution is ...

Thanks in advance for any clarification,
regards,
moi

Well, i stumbled over a track replacement tutorial by Mike Simpson himself. It's not so much about changing non electrified track to electrified but i figure it may work the same. My luck is that there is no electrified track in my route yet. ( i did not intend to use electrification but i changed my mind... :) ). The meaning is to lay a piece of electrified track in my route and then have RW Tools find it in my route's tracks.bin file. Then find the non electrified track and perform a ' search and replace'.

Haven't tried it yet ( i hope to get more insight in how to match the overhead lines with the catenary supports first... ) so i'm not sure if it's going to be as easy as i have 'explained' it here... :)

Of course i'll use a copy of my route. Wish me luck. :D

Jan,
using the replace function should work to change non-electrified track (or track properties) to electrified, but I'm not sure how you would restrict the changes to only certain stretches of track (for example, changing only main line track but not yard track). Perhaps it's as simple as selecting a stretch of track before doing the replace ... of course that would mean doing more than one single replace operation, but it depends on what you're trying to achieve.

I fear that the big job comes later when you want to add the OHLE gantries (or third rail if that's what you want instead) to your scenery - not strictly necessary to run an electric loco or EMU, but it would look very strange without ...

Thanks for the input, and good luck with your venture,

Oh,yes, i'm sure it's gonna be much more then just one single replace operation. I have various small yards in my route for which i used yard track but also more than just one main track type. So far everything that i couldn't accomplish initally i did manage to do afterall ( have to say with considerable and most appreciated help from this forum ! 8) ) so i am fairly confident i'll get away with this too, no doubt after a lot of testing and a mistake or two..

In fact the gantries were the main reason i decided to go with electrified track afterall. I am so used to them ( here in Holland i have never travelled by train on unelectrified track and we have no third rail system here ) that for me it feels like there's something missing. When i placed a few just to see what it looked like i immidiately felt at home. Also placing them is extremely easy via the Gantry Tool.

It's just the wires hanging loose in the air that put me off. Still i'm keeping my fingers crossed for someone to enlighten me about a possible solution...

Cheers,
Jan
