Problem with DEM in TS2014

Post by roadhog123 »

Hello all,
I have read most of the information I could find on this forum about DEM data, but I still cannot seem to get it into the editor.
I downloaded data for the area I am trying to model (Ashford International, N51E051) from here and have a route with the origin set to Ashford International, with some track modelled from the Google Maps imagery (so I know I'm at the right coordinates). I have placed the (*.hgt) files in the /DEM/STRM/ directory of my Steam installation in Program Files(x86) (I'm using Windows 8) and also in Program Files with the same file path, which I heard solved someone else's problem. I load the editor and click the Import button in the terrain editor and select the appropriate options, but when I click OK, the terrain textures refresh and the terrain remains unchanged. I've reloaded the map, but with no more luck.
Has anyone got any ideas? Thanks! :)

I had a fiddle with the DEM around the St.Ives area (Cornwall division) to see if it worked. I figured that if it was working as expected I'd see some pretty distinct cliffs, hills and suchlike. I got the original St.Ives area LON and LAT figures from Google Earth which then plonked me about a mile from Penzance inside TS. I had to crawl my way across county to find St.Ives and take down TS's version of the co-ords. Why they differ I'm not sure but it was out by some distance. I'm pleased to say that St.Ives then sprung forth from the ground like a good 'un. Very impressed.

Having lived and worked in Ashford, on the CTRL project, Ashford itself is fairly flat, or reasonably so. Have a go at somewhere more extreme and see if the process works for you. Good luck with Ashford by the way, I'm tempted by the Hastings to Ashford route myself with a smelly old Thumper.
Quietly beavering away on something and finally getting somewhere

Just download the corresponding area according to your route and drop the files in: Railworks, DEM.
Thanks, I will do and see if that works any better. :)

Thanks. :) My initial plan is to build Ashford to Canterbury (includes my "home" station) and then maybe later I'll extend it out further... The Hastings line, as far as I know still operates with the limited clearance tunnels which required and I assume still do require special narrower rolling stock, so I'll be leaving it until last if I decide to do it, so feel free to have a go yourself. :)
I know Ashford is rather flat, rising about 20ish metres from South to North, but it is 40 or 50m up in the air so I was expecting the terrain height to be well over my head if the import had worked, but I might do a test at Dover to make sure. :)
