Good evening everyone,
I'm in the process of doing the ground work of setting up a new route and wondered if it is possible to copy assets from another provider into my own folder?
For example copying the contents of C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\railworks\Assets\Kuju\RailSimulator
to
C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\railworks\Assets\MyFolder
The reason I want to do this is so I don't have to have lot's of content provider boxes checked and so I can slim the assets down to the ones that I actually will be using and hopefully minimise SBH errors.
I thought this would be quite a simple process of copying and pasting the relevant files and then amending the paths within the associated bin files but after having spent most of today trying various approaches I've yet to get it to work.
So far all I've been able to do is get the assets to show up but when I try to place an object all I get is grey and distorted graphic even though I've copied the relevant texture files too.
Does anyone have any experience with this or know if it's possible and if so what do I need to do?
Many thanks,
Rich

Re: Using assets from other providers in your own asset folder
Hi Rich
I think it is possible, but only useful if you were doing the route for your own use.
Otherwise everybody else would have to perform the same operation as you (or a lot of copying and pasting anyway).
So whereas it may save time your end, its just being tacked on to your audience.
The distorted graphics sounds like DRM but I thought that only affected assets in the RSC folder so I could be wrong.
I also thought there was a way to do what you're trying in RW_Tools, but again its been a while since I looked for it

Thanks for your response.
It's actually intended eventually to be a commercial route. I thought it might be better if I packaged everything up in my own assets folder that I use as opposed to clicking the content providers. I was imagining issues with doing that once it was ready for release with assets that I don't need or there are copyright issues with and I could therefore easily remove. Perhaps I'm thinking too far outside of the box here.
I have got it working fine now with all the Kuju stuff, but yes the RSC assets are still playing up and I have been using RW Tools to go through it. Maybe it's a bad idea but I'm doing all the ground work at the moment with a view to saving me pain at the end. It's all under source control so I can quickly revert what I've done if it is indeed a bad idea which it sounds like it is!
Cheers
Rich

Hi, because some items use absolute paths in them, rather than local paths, within the files, you will still need to have some of the files in the original folder, so it would still need to be ticked - unless you rewrote the files, which is a LOT of work. Hence the delay in removing KUJU dependences from files - loads of editing required - more difficult without the source files.

There is some DRM in play with RSC assets - cloning Carlisle station model from WCMLN works but not from Settle Carlisle.
Should be okay with Kuju assets

You need to read the EULA that is located in the Manuals folder within the Railworks folder. This gives you a good description of what you can and cannot do with the assets created/owned by RailSimulator.com.
