However, a bundled stock item having "dodgy" sounds surely cannot mean that the whole package is only fit for the bin.
If the route's good there's nothing to stop those who simply can't stand to hear the 323 turning their speakers down, or swapping the 323 for the freeware version, or even swapping it for something else completely. There's also nothing stopping them from attempting to improve the existing sounds, or investigate utilising other sounds that may be applicable. Too many want it all for nowt though.
Enjoy the route, treat the 323 (all of the bundled stock in fact) as more of a bonus item and go from there.
The 323s have worked this line from introduction in November 2007 and to have a train which is not fit for purpose is stupid.
Again, this is only my opinion, but I don't think there can be any question that the class 323 is "not fit for purpose". The most important aspects are that it looks good and is pleasant to drive, and it ticks both of those boxes easily. I've no doubt that the sounds could be improved by someone taking a specialised interest in those, rather than a general interest in them as a part of the overall whole, but they are perfectly serviceable as they are.
To your earlier question
If you were driving any Electric traction and the sounds just cut out for a second or two when accelerating would that be acceptable?
My experience with this game is that sounds cutting out is a system issue rather than specific to any particular item of stock, and in the handful of runs I've done with this unit so far I haven't experienced that any more than "usual" for my setup. That is to say, it is a minor annoyance, but one which I've become rather accustomed to over the years and therefore I don't let it spoil my enjoyment

Always amazes me how as soon as dtg post a screenshot to promote a route we automatically need an AP soundpack.
No, not automatically, but possibly some people would like it - does that actually hurt anyone, the suggestion, the actuality - anyone to the extent that the possibility of it even being thought of, let alone suggested, should cause anyone else so much pain and angst?
Train Sim is a game.
It isn't life, or anything near life so does it really matter that someone else might like to have different, better, more accurate, or even worse sounds.
Of course it doesn't and I cannot for the life of me (strangely, a real life) understand why anyone would get so worked up and upset about it...

Fit for what purpose - it functions as intended - sounds may or may not be rubbish, may or may not need, or benefit from alternative sounds - but it is certainly fit for purpose. Now, if it didn't move that might be another thing.
The refund button works well.
For me, the cab details are a bit meh - no opening windows, no flicking light switches etc - looks ok but pretty basic. Route is nice - I just wish someone would make a more detailed representation of the OHLE -

(only kidding...)

Have you read the credits in the manual for information about who did the cab?

I have never heard anyone say "nothing to stop those who simply can't stand to hear the xxx turning their speakers down" what is the point of the sound then?
What's the point of sounds you
can't hear? --- is it OK to give the advice of "turn your speakers up" in that case?

You said "Too many want it all for nowt though" - sorry but the people with this route have just spent £22.49 - is that "nowt" in Yorkshire money?
Yes, they've spent £22.49 and probably got their money's worth, but they aren't posting in here about how poor it is/not fit for purpose/bad DTG are...the ones making the most noise seem to be those who don't have the DLC. For £22.49 in Yorkshire money you can buy a flat cap that fits really well.......

from what I have seen it is a very nice route but it is let down by it's star performer
So use the freeware version, or see if you can use the sounds from that (I assume you're happy with those), even ask if anybody could have a go if you can't do it yourself.

Lol don’t expect a reply to that question after they have checked. It will be a good cab now as it is not done by dtg lol

From the point of view of an ex driver, like Peter, I would classify the unit as unfit for purpose. Others may have a different opinion as is their right. Like others I hope AP or one of the freeware producers will fix the sound. That is my opinion, if you don't like it, do what I have done long ago to two others in the thread and mark me as an enemy, then you don't have to read it, helps the blood pressure no end, unless of course somebody uses the quote option

Doesn't that conflict somewhat with this?

It's only by being aware of those differences, discussing them--even if the discussion gets heated, as long as it doesn't get personally offensive--that we can eventually agree, even if that's only an agreement to disagree.

That's fine, but it's a far cry from claiming that "poor" sounds is a very strong reason not to purchase the route. Can I take it that despite being disappointed with the 323, the route itself pleases you?

Don't forget, if the dlc is that bad, presumably you would have discovered that early on while trying it, if so you can always get a refund of Steam if you have used it for less than 2 hours

Has anyone deciphered the destination codes for the class 323? Frustratingly, the manual simply lists the available destinations in alphabetical order and not the numeric code for each one. I've looked at the destinations.bin but that isn't much help on this one

They go in alphabetical order for
Me
Just hold down F7 or F8 to cycle through them

Last 2 digits of the vehicle number apparently, see if 01 = Aston, 02 = Aston - Football Train...and so on. If they do follow that sensible pattern then it'd be pretty easy to compile a list from the information in the manual.

That's the thing - they don't follow that order! And since they are an "animated" display you have to reload the scenario for the new destination to show

I read somewhere else that Steam takes the whole game time into account not the DLC's purchase time, with most of us nearing or way past the thousands of hours I'm guessing that's not going to help refund requests (if what I read was true of course)

Damn!!...time consuming job then; assign a number, save, test, note it down...…. assign another number, save, test, note it down…...ad infinitum....

As far as I'm aware it isn't true, but it
is the time spent playing the
game since the purchase of the DLC, not the time spent playing the DLC.

You could create a Free Roam scenario, place a number of trains in a line, set the unit numbers in sequential order then note down the destinations from the scenario. Then edit for the next set of destinations (you could just change the numbers in TS Tools). At least do a group at a time then, rather than individually.
