So rather than a full, clean install, think of Refresh/Fresh Start as being like the TS verify routine--it ensures you have the latest files, but does nothing for the underlying configuration.
As well as it may seem to indicate that there's nothing wrong with Windows, it could also mean that a Refresh wasn't enough to solve your issues.
You could end up spending weeks getting nowhere before finally cracking it, so take a while to decide if it's time to "bite the bullet" and do the job properly, getting a strategy sorted in your head. Getting back to the thorny subject here, but consider why you partitioned the discs....then look at the screenshot you posted of your Program Files(x86) folder and see if you can find anything that negates your rationale.

And BEX = Buffer Overflow Exception, essentially being a program attempting to put more data in a location than that location can hold; think of a quart in a pint pot.

I had already explained before why I partitioned the files back in 2010
But it is nice of you to criticize what I was doing back then

I did not see what was wrong wit this fresh start as I have no idea how to reinstall a fresh version of windows whilst it is still operating

Exactly...round and round and round the problem rather than actually finding the cause of it.
749006 wrote:I had already explained before why I partitioned the files
Drives not files...yes, I'm pedantic but when getting down to the level we're dealing with here there's no room for ambiguity or inaccuracy. I know you'd explained previously, but I wasn't asking again for you to tell me, but to ask yourself the question and see if you'd implemented it fully or stuck to it.
It's entirely up to you of course, but as nothing you've done so far has worked you have to start considering a completely fresh install of Windows.

Hi Peter,

it can be a a lot of things that cause these issues, in my humble opinion - most likely this is either a corruption in some system files/device drivers or some drivers require an update (if it exists - if your computer is older some driver updates may not be available).

Is there any HW that might look suspicious in terms of how old it is? Sound card perhaps? What is your full PC spec by the way? Do not see it listed anywhere in the previous posts in this thread.

You might also take a look at your motherboard's BIOS, perhaps a BIOS update might help if the PC is old.

How to do a clean install win 10 - https://www.microsoft.com/en-au/softwar ... startfresh.

BEX error associated with sound files (wrt TS20XX) and DEP settings. Not apparent in your case.

Once again you keep going on about a Decision I made quite a few years ago when It Was the Done thing to Partition Drives.

If the "Fresh Start" was like a TS Verify why did it remove 233 Apps?
About half of which were TS related even though the Game is not on the C:\ drive
Why did I have to reinstall every program that was on the C:\ drive if all it was was a File Verify?

What is the difference between a Fresh Start and a Clean Install?

You're not alone in having problems with the game crashing Peter. It seems to be less stable now now it's ever been.
You ask "What is the difference between a Fresh Start and a Clean Install?"
I think a fresh start is having a wash (and shave if not still furloughed) before doing battle with TS and a Clean Install suggests a bath before bedtime to me...
I guess it's still an old game re-born again and again and we love it at times and hate it at others!

Peter, it's never been "the done thing", as in *something everybody must do*, to partition drives. We partition drives when there's a need to do so, and even all those years ago we could utilise large drives without intervention. The advice of getting TS away from Program Files/Program Files(x86) is to get the game out of a "system area", and is/was often followed by "on a totally separate drive is best". This last part is to eliminate, as much as possible, the game having to wait whilst Windows accesses the dive. Partitioning does not help resolve that, TS is/would be still waiting for the drives reading head to be available. To a degree, having the game on a separate drive protects against damage when running any system maintenance routines--something all programs off the system drive would benefit from. Many would still need reinstalling following a refresh to rebuild the registry entries but any data would (theoretically) be safe.

I said like a verify, as in similar or along the lines of, but a refresh doesn't change the base configuration of the PC. Don't forget that a TS verify will remove stuff, if it's amended versions of default. From your post it seems as if the drive has never had a full wipe in all the time you've had it, so it could possibly be awash with unnecessary/junk files.

Does the game run any better now?

If I run a DTG/RSC Route I can usually get to the end - with some Freeware routes it will hang with OOM

Going from Lakeside to Haverthwaite and towards Cark it was ok but crashed near Grange-O-S
I was only driving a 158

Having just restored everything I need to back it up again for a Clean install
Took me a few hours just to reinstall the programs

Interesting we get the game away from the C:\ drive to avoid problems but the Graphics Card runs off the C:\ drive so does that slow things down?
My spinner was rattling away earlier when playing the game

749006 wrote:Interesting we get the game away from the C:\ drive to avoid problems
Not so much to avoid them, but to lessen their impact; there's nothing wrong with the game on C: if you only have a single file, but getting it out of Program Files is what avoids Windows System File Protection issues.
749006 wrote:but the Graphics Card runs off the C:\ drive so does that slow things down?
Consider the GPU as being part of the system--without it the PC ain't much good  so having the drivers on the system drive makes sense. Most of what it needs is loaded into RAM at boot, so disc access, and any "slowing down" should be minimal. Can you use Task Manager to see if that gives any indication of what's requiring disc access? Is the drive particularly loud, any worrying noises?---a drive on it's way out will cause all sorts of odd problems.

Slightly confusing as that mentions a Clean install but it give you the options of Keeping your files - which does not seem to be a Clean Install?
So I tried it but got this
https://www.thewindowsclub.com/fix-erro ... indows-10/

it was the RefreshWindowsTool that I was using that produced the error

So I will either try the options mentioned or this
https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/win ... 587?page=1

Which is a bit more technical

Pay particular interest to:
Choose Custom Install, then to get it cleanest at the "Where do you want to install Windows?" screen (shown below) highlight each partition to select Delete. None of these partitions will be needed in a fresh install and may interfere or build up a disk junkyard if left undeleted.
This is what I've been banging on about; to properly install a new OS, as opposed to applying a revision to an existing one, you're better off starting from scratch. Use it as good excuse to give the PC a damn good clean.

Unless you simply must have the automatic log in to MS on-line applications install using a local account. Cortana won't nag you after that

Programs...

For starters Adobe Reader isn't needed; Win10 opens .pdf documents natively. CCCleaner, Malwarebytes, Speecy may be handy to have available, but there's no need to have them installed and running all the time. Win 10 has pretty reasonable security built in; Windows Defender Firewall is a very comprehensive piece of kit. The Windows Anti-Virus isn't though, so a *proper* AV package is needed.

Just install what you need, and use regularly, take a few days getting to grips with the base OS before banging stuff on.

I find it interesting that he talks about
If you create new partition(s) to format yourself......
And this was 2017 so partitioning was still a thing

I have to get my head around where I'm placing the USB stick to get Windows to see it on Boot - and change the BIOS
Do it wrong and I have bigger problems :o
CCCleaner, Malwarebytes, Speecy may be handy to have available, but there's no need to have them installed and running all the time.
They are installed but are not set to run at Startup

Spent a couple of hours removing everything from the three other drives on that partition so I might look at it tomorrow when my brain works.

In a USB port directly connected to the motherboard; in other words one of the rear ones.

How often do you run them?
