I haven't seen an official figure for Win 10, but 7 needed a minimum of 15% free disc space in order to be able to run all its background tasks efficiently. I can't see 10 needing less, so at an absolute minimum you
need 32GB. I'd certainly look at doubling that figure, so you're nudging towards the "must take action" point.

If you haven't seen an official figure, you're just guessing.

Yes of course, but it's an educated guess.

Is it? You use comments such as "
you need 32GB", and "
you're nudging towards the "must take action point". The way you've phrased your comments, it would appear to the poster that you're making a definitive statement, but actually, you don't know any of this at all. Double standards, Gary?

This web page suggests 15% on a Mechanical Drive and 20% on an SSD

My Disk Management Page in W10 shows 35% free space - should not be a problem

If you click on "My PC" in file manager, it will list your drives with "xx GB free of yy GB" for each one. If Windows considers a drive has sufficient free space, the line portraying the drive occupation will be blue. If Windows considers there isn't sufficient free space, the line will be red. That usually happens between 15 and 10%. Do not know if there is an amber (yellow) between these states!

20GB according to Microsoft. Not sure how educated a guess that is!

That's how much space you need to install it Steve, not how much is needed to allow Windows to run it's routine background tasks.

I knew there was a good reason I don't usually comment on technical matters

I also used the words "I can't see 10 needing less" before posting those figures, surely indicating to all, other than those with an axe to grind looking for a reason to argue, that it was more a personal view than an authoritative statement. I also posted that I'd seen
NO official figure from Microsoft. If you feel I don't know what I'm talking about then I'm perfectly happy to allow you to ignore whatever I may post, It's no skin off my nose.

They're "rule of thumb" figures, quite possibly based on something official but also concentrate on just one aspect of Windows management routines Peter--defragmentation. Personal opinion/theory/guess/made up fairy tale here..feel free to ignore: possibly because the average PC user has an idea what defrag is, to start delving into the various background tasks would only make for a very dry article, which many would just stop reading.
It's still applicable in your case though, as you're using a spinning drive.

Actually, the general rule for SSDs is not to fill them above 75% of capacity, after which performance begins to degrade. So leave about 60GB free on a 240GB drive. It's always surprising how quickly they fill up so get one bigger than you think you need.

No axes to grind here, but what I do have is a natural distrust of anyone displaying disproportionate amounts of arrogance and hubris towards members in public forums. Let's be clear, I don't need you to "allow me" anything - that statement comes across as yet more pompous swagger on your part. I'm equally happy to ignore whatever you post, or otherwise as I see fit.
Just lighten up and appreciate that other people have equally valid points of view - then we'll all get along.

I can't do that until they express those points of view though.
