did have to extract the Routes .ap, which you omitted in order to make the 2 differing methods look the same. That's what I asked confirmation of.

I had not extracted the Route AP file which I think was why the tracks did not show
Missing texture flagging is not because the asset (the shape file) is missing---it's the shape file that calls for the pictures!
To get missing textures flagging the assets shape is present, but not the texture files.
There is no need for any theorising about the game looking outside a .ap archive in one instance, the only time files outside an archive are used is when those files are
mirrored copies of archived files. The game reads files in the order they can be found, so obviously any extracted files get loaded into RAM first, with the archived copy ignored as it's already been processed.
