Atomic Systems

Since I am installing all the trainsim routes etc, I need to upgrade my Hard Disk to a larger one.
Going to clone it rather than take the long route to install windows then trainsim.

Looked at Acronis software but since I will only be using it once, seems a lot 35 quid to do that once only. I know that there are free software out there, don't know whether its worth the risk to try that.

What kind of hard disk are you upgrading to? The Acreonis software is available as a freeware version from WD IIRC. As long as you have at least one of their drives installed it will work. If you are going to a Samsung SSD, they have their own software which has worked well for me so far. I believe some other brands of SSD have software available as well.

Im only going to a 2tb hard disk not ssd.
I download the Acronis trial and the clone option is disabled, the only bit that is, have to buy it to get that function, which is a pain.

Sometimes your new hard disk will come with some software - think the last couple of SSDs I bought came with a version of Acronis that you could use - worth looking at if you haven't already bought the disk.

You could try this https://www.crucial.com/clone and see if it works for you, even if you've not bought a crucial disk I guess.

Just looked there, as you suggested, came up with a 404 error and went to there main page, pity.

Have you space inside your PC? If so, why not keep the OS on the existing HDD, and install another one for all your other simulation/games software. It makes sense to get Steam - Railworks out of ProgramFiles (the default location) into a separate folder, so it may as well be on another disc (spinner or SSD). You then move your Steam folder to the new disc, and then go into your Steam Library to change the location to the new drive (plenty of posts on here giving you chapter and verse).
You can just copy the Steam folder with just the .exe in it, and allow Steam to rebuild in that location (all your Steam acquired DLC). Then copy over all your other Routes and Assets, leaving the existing one as a backup (which you could then thin out)

When I read your original post I wanted to propose the same.... save yourself the time of copying the OS to a new drive, get a new SSD and move your TS over there...

If you are installing the new drive in to your Computer can you just Drag and Drop the files?

It might take a bit longer but it works quite well
You need to create sub folders first to move things in smaller batches

I have been using AOMEI backup software for some time, it is free and includes a Disk Clone option as well as a number of other back up options.

Thanks Mike, I downloaded the Seagate utility from them, will also look at the AOMEI as well
