That is an eye opener, I'm mid 50's but you really just made me stop and think.
My goodness the years are just flying by so very fast, is it really that long since the route was announced...

When it was first announced I brought "The Stainmore & Eden Valley Railways" book by Peter Walton, must have read it cover to cover about half a dozen times since then, great book,I hit 65 this year, and must admit I wondered it I would see this route before I fell off the perch.

Hi
Was wondering whaat sheds the locomotive would come from on the route,I reckon Tebay would be one,but Penrith looks to small, also noticed looking at the shed code for the Ivatt it was a Middlesborough Locomotive.
Don't think I am a rivet counter, just interested in what would the right locomotive for a route,it's surprising how many times the S&D 7F turns up on a route where they would never have been seen, the same goes for the Mk1 Coaches

I guess that West Auckland and Darlington where two of the main sheds, considerd it was an NER route, wich makes the Q6 and the G5 (and the upcomming J21) perfect for the route.

On the LMS side, Penrith was a 2 road shed, and a subshed of Carlisle Upperby (12B). It only held locos for the Kendal line.
Tebay was a shed in its own right, part of the Carnforth group. In 1948, it had the following locos
42301 11D FOWLER 2-6-4T
42313 11D FOWLER 2-6-4T
42314 11D FOWLER 2-6-4T
42317 11D FOWLER 2-6-4T
42457 11D STANIER 2-6-4T
42464 11D STANIER 2-6-4T
42595 11D STANIER 2-6-4T
In 1950, Penrith became 12C for a few years, with the allocation
58362 12C WEBB " 0-6-0 "CAULIFLOWER"
58389 12C WEBB " 0-6-0 "CAULIFLOWER"
58411 12C WEBB " 0-6-0 "CAULIFLOWER"
58417 12C WEBB " 0-6-0 "CAULIFLOWER"
58418 12C WEBB " 0-6-0 "CAULIFLOWER"
58421 12C WEBB " 0-6-0 "CAULIFLOWER"

During the thirties the Stainmore line was the domain of NER J21 0-6-0, J25 0-6-0, Q5 0-8-0 (from Kirkby Stephen westwards), G5 0-4-4T, GN D3 4-4-0, and GE E4 2-4-0. During the fifties the line saw J21, J25, Ivatt 2MT 2-6-0, Ivatt 4MT 2-6-0, BR Standard 2MT 2-6-0, 3MT 2-6-0, 4MT 2-6-0, and 3MT 2-6-2T tanks.
2 Q6's were transferred to Kirkby DStepghen in April 1955 to work the line west to Tebay (too heavy for Belah viaduct), but left again in May 1955 after they became derailed near Smardale.

Hi,
Thanks for the reply about sheds and loco allocations,so I imagine any thing above a class 5 would be to heavy, although Clans were classified as Light Pacifics.
I find these very helpful,Shed Bash UK they have lots of sheds with allocations from the late 1940's until they closed
Here is a link to Tebay oh and they are free

Indeed the Clans where Light pacifics, being virtually Britannias with a smaller boiler. But they where rarely seen outside Scotland. Let alone on such a minor route as the Stainmore Route. I know that some have been seen on the ECML as far up as Doncaster (I think), but I don't know of any seen beyond Carlisle on the WCML.
But with the line ending at a LNWR station, I could imagine the LNWR Coal Tank and the G2 being regular sights on the line.

The Clans were regulars on the Glasgow to Blackpool runs in the summer (May to September). Most weekends would see 2 or 3 in the sheds. They were notorious for their bad time keeping.
So could be used between Penrith and Oxenholme on the route

No 4-6-0s or pacifics ever operated over Stainmore. The odd LNWR engine may have reached Kirkby Stephen or Barnard Castle (DX and 'Cauliflower'0-6-0s are mentioned in Peter Walton's book), but no tank engines or G2s. There are reports of very rare visits of LMS Fowler 4F 0-6-0, Stanier 5MT 2-6-0 and WD 2-8-0 engines to Kirkby Stephen. The summer Saturday Blackpool specials from the North East continued to run via Tebay until 1961. From 3 February 1958 DMU's (Metro Cammell/101) were introduced between Darlington, Barnard Castle and Penrith. Closure came from 22 January 1962.
