blowingthrough

I checked out that fault and did get it on the Royal Scot, freeze up and missing needle
it happened with me light engine at a standstill by just turning off the small ejector
and waiting for the vacuum leak effect to start.

I can see what Bossman have done, is to use the [-] keys to simulate the piston movement
on the brake valve sadly lacking though is you cannot hook it up as on the real thing.

What I wanted to get over is on the up and coming 8F could they transfer the [-] keys to a model
of a steam brake valve on the side of the boiler like they had and what I have used many times driving them.

I would like to add I was the Steam Consultant to Kuju Games in their efforts to produce the Rail Simulator
along with other Ex railwaymen

Thanks for the reply mate nice to have a younger loco man here

It's not animated from memory but it is usable, if you press the P key while pushing the steam brake spindle in, with the brake handle in the off position it will pin the steam brake spindle in. Similarly if you do the same and pull it out in the off position and press P it will keep the steam brake on until you either drop the hook with P again or move the handle towards on where it will drop back off.

Edward

Yes seen that but what I am trying to get over to folk is that steam locomotives were never
driven using that vacuum/steam brake like that, it only was used as a anti slip brake I think
I mentioned afore.

You would use the correct way using the vacuum control with the small ejector running
even when running light engine

BR standard engines nearly all of them had an independent steam brake so there is no need for
running light or loose coupled with the vacuum ejector on

So, what you are trying to tell is that, on british pre-war engines, you did not use the engine brake to bring the engine to a halt, but only to prevent the wheels to spin when starting a heavy train or in bad weather conditions...
Did I get this right?

Not in the case of locos fitted with a combination brake valve like most LMS locos (with a few exceptions), on these engines you'd operate the vacuum brake which would in turn operates the locomotives steam brake. Effectively you are bringing the loco to a stop with the engine brake, by virtue of the fact the loco/tender doesn't have a vacuum brake cylinder so the train vacuum brake effectively does nothing to stop the locomotive.

That's correct Edward the only thing I can add to that is there was a steam cylinder for the Tender Brakes.

Bossman did a good job of simulating the Vacuum Brake Valve but the [ and ] keys were never meant to be used as a
Independent Steam Brake only as an anti slip if needed first use sanding and I bet they never thought of this ??

Looking into it the Drivers Brake Valve 2 operating systems ( Vacuum to the train brakes coaches or other vacuum fitted rolling stock ) and steam to the engines brakes and tender brakes.

To remind you what this was all about is I wanted to have the Independent Steam Brake on their new 8F model which I really want to get my hands on.

I really like the 8F too but it is not steaming very well imo or the automatic fireman cannot cope with his firing job. Any suggestions or comments?

Yeah, that too Mark. I am still confused with the F5 HUD showing them 'on' or 'off'. 'Open' seems to be a better wording and means they are letting more air in right? In the Bossman Staniers that means that the front damper must be pushed down to open and the rear damper the opposite way i.e. lifted up, which is different from other steamlocos in TS. Should the rear damper be used when travelling forward and vice versa?
I am already doing better with driving the 8F btw. I realized after reading the manual again that even the locomotive condition is included, which is another brilliant touch of realism in the Bossman locos and could have been the reason for the bad steaming I have experienced because I have been driving a couple of weathered versions.

Something a little different, due for release fairly soon.

TCCD (State Railways of the Republic of Turkey) Class 45151.

It is indeed rather annoying. Unfortunately the F5 HUD can't be changed :(

The loco condition is completely randomised when doing Quick Drives - a quick look at the loco number on the HUD will show what condition the loco is. 1 = Excellent, 5 = Terrible, 2, 3, 4 = somewhere in between :D
