Partitioning drives....
This hasn't been necessary for many years and can even cause a degradation in performance. The argument that it nicely defines where things are, what they're for, falls over as a sensibly structured folder schema does exactly the same.
To get the most out of multiple physical drives, irrespective of the technology they use, you'd have the operating system on it's own, exclusive drive, and applications on any others.

We do have to remember that in Ts2018 - PhysX is run on the cpu and not the gpu - possibly to allow AMD cards to work with TS as PhysX is a nVidia thing.
If you look at the opening screen for TS - nVidia is mentioned but NOT AMD - that may be the reason most of us use nVidia cards?
I did provide a guide for TS2014 using nVidia control panel and nVidia Inspector NVI on RWA
http://railworksamerica.com/forum/viewt ... 33&t=12713 unfortunately the pictorial guide on dropbox has been 404'd but I can update and re-post again if there is any interest.

Partitioning drives is very wise in my opinion, depending what's on it as if for whatever reason a partition gets corrupted then the data on the other partitions remain unaffected. My spinner hdd has 4 partitions and yes it does keep data organised nicely so I wouldn't say that argument falls over, I also keep a nice & tidy folder structure but I choose to do both.
I've always had Windows on it's own ssd since I started using them many years ago but I also install all software (except games which go on a dedicated ssd) on the same ssd, never had any performance issues doing it that way and with regards to using an ssd I'd say keeping all applications (non games) on the same drive as Windows will get you the best performance. In the old days before ssd drives became popular then I could see an argument for having Windows on it's own hdd and software on another due to the speed and slow access times but with ssd's there's no reason to do that unless your running out of space or getting close to not having enough free space left on the ssd for the trim function to work correctly.

That's your choice though hst, and as much as I advocate following what the P in PC stands for it doesn't alter the fact that partitioning is not necessary, nor does it argue against my post---I didn't write not to do it, did I? Granted it's implied that I think you shouldn't, but I wasn't laying down a rule.
I assume you've partitioned drives for many years, so is it now a habit rather than a strategy based on best/recommended practices for modern hardware?
Partitioning gives no performance boost, can even harm it and is certainly not what the advice "have TS on a separate drive to Windows" means. Neither does it add much to the integrity of the data on a partitioned volume. If you get corruption from a virus on one partition only that could be because the unaffected partitions only hold data files, not the executables that a virus attacks. Wholesale corruption of a partition could also be the effects of a disc beginning to fail; once that happens all content on that volume is suspect until proven otherwise, and once a disc fails all partitions are lost.
Yes, SSDs have negligible lag but it's still measurable by the appropriate benchmarks software, even though it's of no real consequence and completely noticeable to the average guy. That though still doesn't argue against partitioning not being necessary.
One thing we haven't touched upon so far is whether any anti-virus is kicking in during file access to perform on access/on demand/real time scanning

<<Yes please Peter I for one would like to read more.
Then I might find out how I got this message on TS !
I know I can tick a box and get rid of it BUT why is it there anyway ! what did I select
However,I must be doing something right I've just a full length blast on Glorious Devon / 08:00 Manchester Penzance double headed with King Class
The Sound and Pictures were stunning and I didnt see a single stall at around 40FPS.

I remember that, and looked for the same sort of guide for AMD but was not so lucky

John, to turn the PhysX status display on/off look at the top of the nVidia Control Panel--I can't remember the exact wording so if you see a view or options setting look in that. In wherever it is is the option to turn on or off the status display; it's just a tick (or lack of) that sets your choice.

PhysX runs faster and will deliver more realism by running on the GPU.
Running PhysX on a mid-to-high-end GeForce
GPU will enable 10-20 times more effects and visual fidelity than physics running on a high-end CPU.
I cant seem to find a way of doing it.

Unfortunately TS 2012 - 2018 does not support running PhysX on the GPU (see my post above) - cpu only. I think this allowed AMD graphics cards to run TS as they do not have the PhysX "module".
Turn off the PhysX indicator via 3D settings in NVCP.

John, the selector for cpu gpu is under 3d settings configure surround physx.

Yes I know capt pedant!

But John asked the question, only obliging.

Not that obliging Martin if he'd set it to GPU only to find the game wouldn't run

Well, I have had it set and it does run.
