Headlight, Headboard & tail lights BIN files?

Post by RobertM »

Evening all,

Today I have been messing with BIN files, specifically the modern flashing tail lamp from UKTS that you can add to any piece rolling stock via the BIN files, and despite this being what some would see as a minor thing in the editing of TS, I feel quite proud of myself for getting it all working :D

So now I feel quite confident and would like to do some more editing, what I am wanting to do is recreate the Cathedrals Express that ran last month with 70013 from London to Norwich (minus hot box issues). What I would like to do is 3 things to the train set.

- Add a modern LED light to the centre bracket on the running plate which is then flanked on either side by normal oil lamps.
- Add a cathedrals express headboard.
- Turn of the D.I.T 47's rear lights.

Currently the centre bottom lamp is a standard oil lamp, what I would like to do is take the lamp from the JT 4MT pack and place that there, am I right in guessing this would be a copy & paste job from one to the other overwriting the section for the Brits centre lamp section with this?

The JT Brits do come with headboards, but non of them are the Cathedrals Express ones. Now I dont know if the board itself exists in TS currently, maybe a SSS enhancement but not sure, can someone confirm if it does exist and if so, can it be added to the loco the same way I have suggested for the lamp? For bonus points there was also a wreath on the smoke box in remembrance of someone, has a wreath been done in TS and if so can this be added?

Finally, I have added a tail lamp to the rear loco (D.I.T 47), managed to get it positioned onto a lamp bracket and it flashes away quite nicely. But what I also want to do is turn the locos own tail lights off, I have to have the front lights on on the leading loco for them to show, but this turns on the 47's lights aswell, can I disable them?

Any advice would be gratefully received.

Robert :)

Yes, no, and maybe.... :o

If the lamps are defined in the <Children> section of the Brit's .bin file then it's a dead easy simple edit, just swapping one for the other. If, however, the lamps are part of the Brit model then it would get a wee bit more involved, bringing in the influence of the scripting. I don't have the stock to check to I'm fishing here!

As for the headbord, no idea....but adding a child object (if you find one) is easy enough. For the wreath, there may be one as part of the Christmas lights pack that was available in the UKTS library for RailWorks (I think...it's definitely for an older version of the game though)

Have you set the 47 as a 'broken engine' in the scenario editor? That prevents it contributing to powering the train but I'm not so sure it turns off any lights or particle effects. There are completely dead examples of the 47 available, and RW Tools has, I believe, an option to produce completely dead versions of locos so you may have to go along that route. Of course that could 'kill' the addon tail light too just to make things *interesting*

Evening,

I spent the best part of today in BIN files galour and have managed to get 2 out of 3 goals done. :)

I found a child lamp that suits from the SSS DT 4MT enhancement pack and the Cathedrals headboard from the BR Blue King enhancement pack which I have mounted both successfully :D

The main catch is though because these are done with child scripting they are both permanently mounted, given that the 4MT has it set you can scroll through the different headlamps I am assuming this is done somehow via input mappers? So will look at them next to see if I can figure out if I can enable them via keyboard commands in the sim rather than in the editor/scripting.

Still haven't found a wreath, its an unusual item in itself. I have looked through what SSS enhancement packs I have (I figured they would be a good place to start) and non of them have it. The hunt continues for it.

47, I went through the BIN & eventually ended up deleting all 4 child references to the tail lamps (2 front, 2 back), but they still show somehow? Making the actual loco DIT in scenario makes no difference unfortunately. Will have a look at RWTools and see if that can help.

Rob :)

Minor point, but anything in a child object section of a .bin file isn't scripting.

No, that's an example of scripting. The input mappers deal with which keys are used--these are .bin files so easy to have a look at.

You'll need a script to make the key presses work--that's what scripts do (part of anyway, telling the game how to react to a change.

An alternative is to create two .bin files, one with no headboard (i.e. the original), one with the headboard child object (and change the Display Name accordingly, e.g. add HB at the end of the Display name). Then both versions will appear in the Scenario Editor picklist and you can choose as appropriate.

Admittedly this doesn't allow you to add or remove the headboard in the middle of a scenario, but it does give you the two versions of the loco.

You will be familiar with this process with regular and No-Driver loco options.
