Re: Boat of Garten the full circle route.
Whilst I can understand people not wishing to get actively involved in certain social media sites, I can assure you there is nothing sinister about the "TS - Recreating Britain's Lost Railways" Group or its intentions. The group is only trying to keep control of the routes and ensure they are not used for commercial purposes. The Facebook group also allows for constructive criticism/suggestions and research information to be exchanged as the quest is for "real" lost railways of Britain - nothing fictitious.

For all you Nervous Nannies afraid of joining Facebook, you DO NOT HAVE TO INVOLVE YOURSELF WITH SOCIAL MEDIA.
YOU DO NOT HAVE TO CREATE A LIST OF FRIENDS. You control your own destiny.
Just . . . register, enter minimum info, then request to join that Group.
No damage. No invasion of Privacy. No hassle. No Identity theft. Now . . . no whining please . . . just do it!
And for the love of God, if someone takes the time to create a route and then chooses to launch it via Facebook, that is HIS prerogative. Good for him. Get over it, and either go with the flow, or shut up and move on.
I'm sick of this continual second-guessing and whining about everything.
There. Said it. Christmas spirit and all that.
Merry Christmas. Oh sorry, is that the wrong word to use?

Re: Boat of Garten the full circle route.
I suspect at some stage I shall try again. It can't really be all that bad, I suppose, if I follow the rule of keeping everything private, and avoiding putting out ANY info that I don't want put out.

Re: Boat of Garten the full circle route.
A Merry Xmas to everyone who passed on their kind comments on my route and thank you to all who thought that I needed the topic turned into a discusion on Facebook. I have never had any problem with facebook and as far as I know neither has the group. The route took 1.5 years of hard work to make. If you have a problem with facebook then please just dont download it. Perhaps someone should start new topic here on the good and bad of facebook rather than filling up this post which was purely to give you info on where you could get the route " Free" if you want it. If you have a problem with facebook then sort that out with facebook as I am not interested in you thoughts. I have lots of friend on this site that have helped me with various routes over the years and thought I would give something back to everyone as a way of a thank you for Xmas. If I had know some of the feedback re facebook I was going to receive It will make me think twice in future.

Stewart, nobody is complaining about the route only voicing concerns about how the distribution is handled--some worries plainly unfounded but there are legitimate reasons why some refuse to embrace the Facebook concept.
isn't exactly helping, is it?bigstewart wrote:If you have a problem with facebook then sort that out with facebook as I am not interested in you thoughts

Re: Boat of Garten the full circle route.
I'd have thought that uploading to UKTS would have been the perfect way to do this. Even if you did upload it here i've no doubt someone would complain about download speeds and having to pay for premium.bigstewart wrote:I have lots of friend on this site that have helped me with various routes over the years and thought I would give something back to everyone as a way of a thank you for Xmas. Merry Christmas Stewart and thankyou for your work.
Re: Boat of Garten the full circle route.
And here is me thinking that the more ways that people could download a route that someone had spent a long time creating, the more happier and proud that the route designer would be, as he would have more customers/fans !
Just shows how wrong I could be !

Re: Boat of Garten the full circle route.
The route is a free route there are no restrictions on its use or distribution. The advantage of releasing a route on one site is that if any updates or patches are required or any scenarios are made for the route you will be notified . If a route is realeased on several sites all updates and patches would then have to be put on all sites and it just gets rather messy. As well as my route there are links to other routes that are free and the same applies to them. We are not trying to stop anyone from downloading the route/routes . You are asked a couple of simple questions when you want to be a member of the group but this to try and keep out spammers etc. You can also join discussions on the route/routes and upcoming projects. We are not tying to compete with UKTS which is on a totaly different scale. We are just a small group of train sim users trying to add something to your enjoyment of train sim , free to all and Recreating some of the now sadly closed lost routes of Brtiain's Railways. Please accept the route in the spirit of Christmas that it was given. Have a great festive season and have some fun driving trains.

Re: Boat of Garten the full circle route.
Have you thought that through fully?....you're effectively saying anybody can upload it to any other site.bigstewart wrote:The route is a free route there are no restrictions on its use or distribution
Doesn't need to be on several sites, all you do is have a single package on a hosting site (oodles of 'em available for free) and posts in forums pointing to that package. Add the caveat that only if you're a Facebook group member would you receive notice of any patches/upgrades etc and you're done.bigstewart wrote:If a route is realeased on several sites

Re: Boat of Garten the full circle route.
Most people on the UKTS site and other are honest people and dont usually rip off other peoples work and post it on other sites. I would be dissapointed if they did but I have no control over what anyone does when they download it as its not a comercial route with inbuilt anti pirate software. It is just the work of an old guy in his spare time. It is made using assets from commercial routes so obviously you have to respect their terms and conditions. I do specify that it is not used for commercial gain. If you want to look at it to help with your own route building thats ok as thats how we all started learning. If you want to use it as a base for a future route extending to Inverness, Aberdeen, or the old coastal routes you are welcome to do so as long as you acknowledge the original route in your release. I would hope if it was released on other sites without my authority the admin on the site would remove it.

Hi. I joined the group yesterday, having been made aware of its existence via this site. I have no problems with the idea of using FB as a communications platform and have been made welcome on the FB site. It is up to individuals to monitor and adjust security options to their preference. Ignore the conspiracy theory social media hijacking of the thread before this point.
I'm downloading the route at the moment; it looks stunning and I'm sure I'll appreciate the work that will have gone into it.
A simple thanks for this treat at Christmas!

I apologise for any upset I may have caused, and I hope in the future to use what looks to be a stunning route!

Re: Boat of Garten the full circle route.
If I may turn the discussion back to Boat of Garten...
I'm having lots of fun running trains out of Boat on the Highland Railway and GNoSR routes.
I'm using Caledonian Railway liveried stock, although its operating area was further south, because I haven't been able to find HR or GNoSR liveried stock. I was lucky enough to get the HR-liveried reskins that Kris Wilson put on his Victorian Lad site but there seems to be little else around yet.
My - exceedingly superficial - researches suggest that Drummond locos (for the HR) and Johnson locos (for the GNoSR) locos and Stroudley carriages (for both HR and GNoSR), suitably liveried, would not look out of place.
What has anyone else found - or adapted?
Kind regards,
John M
