That makes a lot more sense to me now!

Thanks to all who have offered advice here! A bit like railway modelling: it's nice to buy stuff and use it, but in more cases it's far more fun to muck about and modify stuff! I think it's the coming into simming from modelling ( :o ) that makes me want to reskin, change sounds, modify routes, build routes rather than just download DLC and shout 'Isn't DTG fantastic - look at that awesome 7F they're still offering'. I look at stuff like the JT Bulleid, and want to enhance it. In that case I will buy the SSS pack, but I do get enjoyment out of learning how to modify and change stuff.

Therefore, I appreciate all the advice, help and assistance that people on this forum have offered.

All the best,

Ah yes, I remember now, I open .bin files with a little program called "RSBinTool" which I think I downloaded from this site a long time ago!
I've also got another note in my own personal RS notebook which says:

TO ALIAS HORN/WHISTLE SOUNDS TO ANOTHER LOCO

In the donor loco's Audio\Cab folder copy Class XX horn sound.bin
Class XX horn.proxy bin
Class XX horn.proxyxml
To the loco to be changed’s identical files.
Then rename XX to the loco to be changed’s Class No\name,
e.g. If you are changing Class 25's existing sounds for another loco's: the file names need to be changed to Class25 horn sound.bin etc.

Perhaps it's more complicated than that these days though.

P.S. I also use a program called "DXTBmp" to open TgPcDx files for repainting/reskinning purposes, but that's probably Old Hat again now as well!
Still, it might bring back a few memories to one or two old stagers on here...

No...a loco that's aliasing sounds from another will not have it's own proxybin or proxyxml files to replace--that's why sounds are aliased, to give otherwise silent locos some noise!

A great little utility for exporting alpha channels for editing, so not totally 'old hat'.

Ah! Got it!!
That little alteration worked for me as I was replacing the Class 47 horn sound with the Class 55 horn sound, the Class 47 already having its own sound in the first place.

I haven't tried GPtech's method yet, as I have still got an issue, it runs as follows:

1) Open .bin file using RWtools.
2) Edit relevant part of script.
3) Save (File, Save TS2016 file)
4) Error message appears twice
5) Original file becomes .bak, but no replacement file shown. The ONLY .bin file (with the same name as I edited) has become a .bak - the new .bin has not been created.
6) .bak opened and code is the same as when I started.
7) Loco no longer appears in game

Does anyone know why this issue may be occurring/how it can be solved?

Strictly speaking, it's not a script but a configuration file. If you say you're having bother editing a script you'll get loads of advice about how to deal wit lua scripting, which whilst it might be interesting is no use to you at all when you're working on a .bin file. What exactly was your edit?
sem34090 wrote:4) Error message appears twice
Error messages are great, they tend to give a huge clue as to why things won't work so what is the error message you get?
sem34090 wrote:6) .bak opened and code is the same as when I started.
Yeah, .bak files are the version of the .bin before the editing so you can easily drop back a step when you get it wrong.

I knew I'd used the wrong word... just couldn't think of the right one!

I'll have a look at the error message tomorrow.

I agree, the idea of .bak files is useful, but not when there's no longer a .bin file! At all!
