Hunslet 4w Diesel Loco for TS

Hi All,

Just came across this: http://www.trensim.com/lib/rs/index.php?act=view&id=315

Haven't tried it yet, and quite honestly I wasn't looking for it! I was actually looking for Portuguese Metre gauge stuff, and some Spanish stuff, but saw it and thought it'd be ideal for Maerdy and the like.

All the best,

The projected lights on it are a wee bit OTT for TS2018, but it works fine. I'm sure it's used in some scenarios for North East Rails.

I have used it a few times to dot around in the background on industrial sidings or on North East Rails - its a nice little engine!

I have now used it* and can agree with the above comments! Possibly one of the best bits of freeware available!

*(on PDL - Towing a couple of Metre Gauge Mikados and Mallets... try and find a photo of that! The gauntlet is laid: a pair of Iberian metre gauge steam locos being towed out of Portsmouth Harbour by a Hunslet 4w Diesel Shunter, an Austerity and a pair of terriers in Bluebell Railway 1960's black and WC&PR Green named 'Batman' and 'Robin'... find a real life photo! Oh, and don't forget the class 377 in the background!)

If anyone is interested...
I had a look at this little loco. As it dates back to 2010 for Railworks and I have one or two locos working alright, but which are not supposed to, in Rail Simulator, I thought I'd give it a go.
Although it says on the website that it is only set up for driving in expert mode, I find that I can in fact drive it in intermediate mode. The only problem is that it has no brakes! I can stop it by putting it into reverse and applying just a little power though, and then take the power off when it's very nearly at a standstill. Takes a bit of judgement to get it to stop precisely whereabouts you want it to (one can imagine a pile up at the buffer stops)!
It works perfectly as an AI train and stops where it's supposed to in that mode. As an AI train the headlights are permanently on though. I shall have to delve into the simulation file to see if I can set them to be off (>False< instead of >True< somewhere perhaps!).
Good fun though, nice little engine right up my Light Railway street!
Ted.

Use the cab control--you can grab the brake handle with the mouse, or if you have to use the keyboard try / to apply the handbrake.

The "over bright" headlights is caused by the texture, foco.TgPcDx, so replacing that with an invisible texture takes you from

to

All I used was a blank number texture (primary_number_#), renamed to suit of course and the original foco.TgPcDx remaned to foco.TgPcDx.ORIG

I'm intrigued by

which are those? Whilst nobody could ever guarantee that an older loco would work in newer versions of the game, I can't think of any that are flagged as "impossible to use"
All the old RailSimnulaor/RailWorks assets are built around the same underlying code base as we use in TS today, so whilst there may be elements of a model that don't work as originally intended we're just looking at wee tweaks there to get them running.

Thanks for that info gptech, I will try that for the headlights.
Two locos that immediately come to mind that work in Rail Simulator are DT's 2P 4-4-0 and the N2 0-6-2Tank. When RSC put RS aside as a stand alone game and started to develop RailWorks, DT straight away abandoned RS so far as they were concerned, and did say that those two locos would not work in RS. However my experience showed that during the first year or two of RW's development the difference between the two games was small enough for some of the earliest releases to actually work alright in RS if one accepted a compromise or two. For instance placing one 2P 4-4-0 would have it appear with express headcode lamps and the Pines Express headboard on it, place another and that would only have the stopping passenger headcode on it.
Certain freeware locos would also work without any real problems, DRB-simstuff's class 58, RailVision's class 144, and the beta version of AlanJackson's class 150 all work very satisfactorily in RS Intermediate mode, although the doors on the 150 are one solid door instead of two sliding doors! But that one is a beta version and not therefore fully detailed. I don't mind that though, I was chuffed to have it anyway!
I also have some Southern Railway coaches which work quite OK, although the windows appear black and not transparent. RScott's GWR railcar works as well, though the windscreen is not quite transparent enough, it is like driving through a mist or fog.
I only have a now very low end PC and I know that TS20xx would not work on it now after all the automatic updates, so I'm still happily plugging away on RS. I'm also very familiar with RS's folder and file set up now, and with an accumulation of notes and instructions copied from this forum over the years I can do many things with it.
Ted.

Ahh...I misunderstood slightly, thinking the other way around--that older stuff wouldn't work in TS2018.

However, the blanket statements issued by providers that newer stuff wouldn't work in RS has to be taken as a generalisation--yes, they probably won't work in the same manner if the newer models were built calling for features/routines that RS doesn't support but many of those can be worked round. The issues you've noted with windows is possibly one of that ilk, only needing RS compatible textures for the glass swapping in.

That's how the game's always worked---those items will be determined as the game reads the numbering .dcsv file, and as the whole idea of the dynamic numbering system is to eliminate any duplicate numbering until the full list has been exhausted you'll always have a variation as you place loco after loco.
