DTG At Warley Model Railway Exhibition, 25/26th November '17
Just thought I'd start a topic on this, seeing as I'm attending the show (some of you may know/have gathered that I am slightly more interested in railway modelling than in TS, especially modelling the LBSCR, SECR, LSWR and BR(S), with a bit of SR, LMS and BR(W) thrown in for good measure.)

Re: DTG At Warley Model Railway Exhibition, 25/26th November '17
It's my annual visit to this show.
I went in to the Ian Allan Bookshop, near to Birmingham New St station, to purchase my Advanced ticket just yesterday.
I prefer full model trains over train sims but then I can run a lot more in this game than on a model railway.
And even though we go "how much" when a new route or DLC appears it's so much cheaper than a model train.
Scotrail Class 68 in the game for £11.99 including some coaches
An 00 Gauge loco will set you back about £130.00 or more if you like Sound
But then you have something tangible to touch and run compared with something digital which could disappear with a computer fault.
Looking forward to the show.
Peter

I'll be going hopefully on the Sunday, as work keeps me away from the Saturday sadly - looking forward to seeing if they have the 1st gen pack on a demo but I doubt they will do.

I agree! (And I need to get to the Ian Allan bookshop at some stage!).749006 wrote:It's my annual visit to this show.

I generally prefer modelling, and pre-grouping generally means kits. I'm experimenting with 3D printing, and am hoping some of the stuff I do can be adapted for TS purposes. I don't generally buy new models, as the price has gone beyond my range (not saying the new ones aren't superb value or unreasonably priced, just outside my range of disposable income!), but I prefer to spend (as I did recently) £7 on a perfectly serviceable Hornby Class 142 set (Don't ask...), £25 on a Mainline Collett Goods (in a complete train set), or £55 on a brand new Hornby Bulleid pacific (I still don't know how I got it for that price...) than, say £11.99 (Somewhere about there for the 142 isn't it?), £9.99 (Collett Goods on SSS?) or £24.99 (a decent length route to a high standard) for TS stuff. I see more sense to buy a model loco, a few buildings and maybe a wagon that I can use for my several layouts for £50 than a couple of bits of decent DLC for the same price.
That said, one private 'commission' (Sort of. Not really...) is to do a TS model of somebody's fictional layout in it's real setting, in order to work out appropiate loco - train size ratios for the fictional route. As it stands, the gradients on the route he has chosen (and intends to model other parts of) are too steep for Double Fairlie (It's narrow gauge) to manage any more than 3 bogie coaches, and only two up the 1 in 30 leaving one station. Up until now, we've been running 0-4-2 tank engines (on the layout) with as many 6 coaches on the layout. Now we will probably start to keep things more realistic for the terrain of the area: a Quarry Hunslet or a Glyn Valley tram loco won't manage 5 long 4-wheelers up a 1 in 45 without assistance. This has also led to us simulating banking on certain sections of the layout. A bonus of this is that it's more interesting to the viewing public (It's an exhibition layout), as well as appropiate to the location.
All the best,

Actually, here's a thought:
DTG might be giving away free copies of TS2018 and TSW... If so, I'll pick up one of each, and any other freebies on offer...
They did it in 2016... I haven't been to any shows they've done this year. The only reason I have TS is because of the freebies from Brighton Modelworld - sadly no more -(which not only included all of TS2016, but Weardale & Teesdale too!) and Alexandra Palace.

I'm not going to join the model vs DLC debate, but regarding the making a real sized simulation of the model, could you not double the radius and lengths of sections of track so as to half the gradients out? I'm sure with a bit of planning it will work, because whilst the modelled curves will look fine on a layout, in TS you may not be able to get them as sharp as required, and certainly won't get much speed going on anywhere either
As an example, in Peco N Setrack, the no.1 curve radius is 228mm, which converts to 33.7 metres - the minimum curve for a Class 37 was 80.4 metres.

A few UKTS regulars will be going on the Saturday. Duncan & John Chaddock, myself, RobertM and CoDriverMike. Nothing to do with DTG but we are all meeting up to see the show, visit the DTG stand and no doubt enjoy some adult beverages during the day.
Kindest regards

Fair enough with the debate...
The layout has no semi-circular curves! It's end to end, from an off-scene 'fiddle yard' to the scenic, station, area. The idea was to take the concept (A railway could've been built from A - B, and here's a model of the terminus) and see how it would work in the real world, so modelling the whole (imaginary) line in TS, using DEM data for reasonably accurate terrain, helps to get an idea of what operations and train lengths are appropiate. Obviously, running the odd anomaly (including wrong-scale items: the layout is 7mm narrow gauge, so uses 00 (16.5mm) track, so the occassional Bulleid Pacific, Peckett 0-4-0ST or tram appears) doesn't go amiss, and nothing has to be as per the TS model.

Found the DTG stand, they had two computers running TS2018 with the North Wales Coast route and one with TSW and the Great Western line, and were giving codes for 50% off for TS2018, so even if you just want that route that's not a bad price at all.

The DTG stand was fairly well rammed each time we stopped by. A lot of interest and lots of interesting questions being asked.

Great show all round, rammed as usual, but good all the same. Picked up a Bachmann Robinson O4 2-8-0 for £37 (And I now have the TS DLC too!) and a Bachmann ex-LBSCR E4 0-6-2T for £38, both steals at those prices, and both beautiful runners!
I got an approximately 30 second to 1 minute play with NWC, enough time to set the Voyager up and full power it out of Llandudno... missed the 50% off codes though
