I am trying the Class 50 scenario 'BR 1A16 Penzance to Paddington ' in the Western Mainlines route. As I join the locomotive the engine is already running. I can't get it into forward gear, and would be grateful for any help with this.

The Class 50 is not by JT which is what might be confusing you.
In the Class 50 by Meshtools you need to move the handle towards you from Off to Neutral (with the S key) and then cancel the AWS.
You can then go in to FWD using W as normal
It might be possible to go just from Off to FWD but towards you is the first direction.
