Because they feature a particular trip...there are many shuttle type scenarios about though, admittedly using 'sensible' traction rather than shunters!
The duration has never been seen as a factor with regards to stability, the limits are usually thought of as being asset density so you should be OK---have you a particular route/trip in mind?
Duration is not directly affecting stability, but distance covered in a way is - and therefore a long trip over a long distance could see a crash after having covered some number of route-miles. It highly depends on how demanding the route is however.
For instance, on the route Western Lines of Scotland there's a scenario with the Flying Scotsman that, if I'm not mistaken, takes about 2.5 - 3 hours. For that route, that's no problem.
However the German route Trier to Koblenz, the Moselle Valley route, when I drive a scenario from Trier to Koblenz which will take around an hour, I'll have to save before reaching Koblenz - it will often crash when getting near to Koblenz with some sort of out-of-memory error.
This is because the route is very demanding and TS has loaded a lot already into memory, that it can't fully release.
After crashing, restarting TS and loading the scenario from the savepoint, I can usually finish it.
