The confirmation email came from a company called Xsolla and the details on my Paypal confirmation shows them as Xsolla Inc. support(at)xsolla.com and I assume a telephone number Hotline 1-877-797-6552, Xsolla are an electronic payment processor, apparently, from California, Direct2Drive are also based in California.

Resetting your password does not work?
I opened the account immediately before making this purchase after reading preceding posts.
"And why exactly can't you login to your account? " - Because it doesn't recognize the e-mail address & password combination I used to set up the account earlier today.
I completed the purchase while the account was open and was told to expect an e-mail which never arrived. Pay Pal confirmed the transaction.
"And when did it stop working?" - The first time I tried to log in after making the purchase approximately 20 min after creating the account.
"Resetting your password does not work?" - No. When I enter the e-mail address a dialog box says the account is no longer operational ( or words to that effect).
The questions you are asking as are relevant and to the point unlike the frustrating run around I get with the automated support system. I don't expect the problem to be resolved here but posted my experience to let others know the potential pitfalls of using this site.
Incidentally I have often purchased TS addons from GMG with 100% customer satisfaction.

Hi skiddaw

I understand this is all very frustrating. Did you open a totally new account with D2D before you made the purchase? If so did you get an email from them where you have to confirm the account to make it active? I am not sure if D2D sends such emails but if so that could be a reason that the acount is not 'operational' as you put it. Suggest that you check your emails (also spam folder) to see if you perhaps overlooked it. Just trying to help, I do not remember if I got such email when I opened my account a while back.

Then I found this support link: https://support.direct2drive.com/ Is this the one you used to get an answer? If not try to contact them through this site.

'Why is it that the railway station is so far away from the village?'
The local pauses for a while, then replies:
'They thought it would be a good idea to build it next to the railway line.....'

Thanks Black8 for the post, pick up a couple of items in the sale.

Thanks for the help Jos.
Yes the account was totally new, opened just for this purchase. I have checked the e-mails including spam.
In retrospect, I should have made sure the account was working properly , by logging out and in again, before making the purchase.
Yes I have been in contact with D2d several times using the e-mail link on the page. The replies are instant and automated and just refer to pre-printed articles or tips , which don't get to the root of my problem.
However I found a link to billing which has promised an e-mail response from one of their operators. I am waiting for their reply. I will post here if I get a satisfactory outcome. Fingers crossed it may get sorted.
