I offered to help a friend start his new project “The Lynton & Barnstaple Railway” We needed to create a new route, of course and used the facility in TS2017 to do this but we had really difficult time getting the correct co-ordinates from Google Earth.
I wonder now if indeed Google Earth gives a correct Latitude and Longitude off the cursor?
As you can see from the enclosed pictures the current station where the preserved line in Devon is 51.12.06 North and 3.53.16 West (that was read off the Cursor)
This is the required location
When you start a route in TS you select the Ground Texture Set, give the route a name and add the Latitude and Longitude and click create.
BUT after laying a few feet of track just to see if the start is in the correct place Train Sim Live Maps puts us in a different place on the map.
If you go back to Google Earth and enter the LAT & LONG in the search box Google also sends you to the same spot as TS Live Maps but the LAT & LONG are the same as the ones entered and read from the Cursor.
Please, what goes on ?
Cheer John

Hi John
Small point, but did you convert the "degrees; minutes; seconds" to just degrees with decimal places?
So, 51° 12' 06" = 51° + 12'/60 + 06"/3600 = 51.20167°
and
3° 53' 16" = 3° + 53'/60 + 16"/3600 = 3.887778°
Also, the longitude should be negative! 3° 53' 16" W = -3.887778°
And that, granny, is how you suck eggs

BINGO
Hi Nick, well I did remember the minus !
As for the rest of it.................51° + 12'/60 + 06"/3600 << That bit
I wouldnt have had a clue.
So Sir Nick,, you are now promoted to the "Order of Scottish Mathmaticians" for getting me out of a hole !
As the "evidence" shows, Bang On. Many Many thanks

John,
Don't know if you're aware but you can set Google Earth up to give the cursor position in decimal degrees which obviously saves having to convert.

Don't feel bad, I did this many years back in Railworks when I had a dabble at route building - spent hours trying to work out why my marker was telling me to place Portchester station in the middle of Portsmouth Harbour!

What a simply brilliant forum this is.
I suppose the best way, for me anyway, is to sometimes get it wrong and learn from your mistakes.
I'm a practical person, I'm terrible at retaining information from books/manuals. This way with the help and advice from all of you makes TS a great deal more interesting & fun too.
Thank you all.

Re: Google Earth vs TS Live Maps
When I was an apprentice, many years ago, we had a chap with us who hailed from Singapore. After cocking something up I said the usual British maxim "Ah, well. We all learn from our mistakes." John Wong was horrified. "That's stupid.", he said, "You should learn from other people's mistakes. It's much quicker and you don't repeat the error."
I reckon he had a point.
