Mike is perfectly correct in saying that mass merging is very problematical when trying to renumber AND shift items within a tile. I managed it on single tiles by a series of selection and movement withing the editor - but never with track. A lot of work, and in the main it is better to bite the bullet, and redo all the scenery etc on the extended part of the base route.
I did manage to successfully merge WCMLoverShap and The Port Road, because they had the SAME ORIGIN (Dumfries). I created clones of each, then truncated WCMLoS about 1 mile south of Carlisle, keeping the southern part (and also removing the OHLE as I was regressing to 1950/60s). The Port Road finished around a few hundred metres north of this, so I was able to merge the two clones. This left a gap of one tiles worth of track. As this was plain track, connecting them was simple. The 2 tracks bin files were also merged (quite a simple task really, using a suitable text editor). Some smoothing of the terrain was needed at the join. Whether this HUGE route will ever make it to the public domain is another matter, but I do a little on it (relaying track and infrastructure lost in the late 60s) in between working on my other projects.

mikesimpson wrote:I spent a great deal of time trying to merge routes when the original Rail Simulator (predecessor to TS20..) came out by trying to calculate the different positions on each tile of the objects there and converting them mathematically to their position on new blank tiles added to the original route.

Unfortunately due to lines of longitude not being parallel but merging towards the poles, the distances within tiles changes as they head north/south, and the math involved was way beyond me.

However if you believe the earth is really flat, then lines of longitude will be parallel and route merging should then be possible?

Mike
I belive route merging would be possible. I mean, it is just a matter of moving tiles. If a user goes into route A's editor and head over to the coordinates of route B's Point of origin, and note the tile position, then he have that is needed to rename the tiles nessesarly.

Now I stumbled upon an error that when I did this, my tiles was 13 tiles off and I had to do this a 2nd time to do thins correct. I Think that it would work better if, instead of haing a Point of origin, it would be better to have a reference Point of a station along route B. One way would be to head to that station's coordinates in both routes, and note down the tile pos. and see the difference. I belvie that would work out great!

Oh, if it were that simple. Yes, you can move all the types of tiles by renumbering, but you will FAIL with the track tiles. As I have said on more than one occasion, renumbering tiles does put the scenery, etc, in roughly the right place (ie from 0 to 400m out in horizontal and vertical positions), but you will still need to lay the track. Again, as I have said before, you can select a large section of scenery, and then move it to the correct position (again, before laying track).

Well, I get it now. Loft tiles is not possible to be moved!

I have learned my lession. Tried to move some roads but that simply fails the game.

Came to the conclusion that the problem in that case is lying within the road tile itself and not the .bin as the .bin was pretty much empty.

Well, did an apptempt but seems that I need to convince my Swedish newbies to not start the coordinates next to their favorite Town next time. ;)

Correct. Here it is from the "RouteProperties" of RSC Liverpool to Manchester

Code: Select all

					<Origin>
						<sGeoPosition>
							<Lat d:type="sFloat64" d:alt_encoding="32772D211FB44A40" d:precision="string">53.4072</Lat>
							<Long d:type="sFloat64" d:alt_encoding="6F47382D78D107C0" d:precision="string">-2.97728</Long>
						</sGeoPosition>
					</Origin>
If 2 routes have the same origin (such as Western Lines of Scotland and WCML over Shap) then they can be joined together.

Great I'll check both add ons of Manchester to Liverpool and the WCML Trent valley (Staford) for their origins and reply back with the result :)

Re: how to copy and paste part of a route onto another?

Post by brysonman46 »

Well done John. I have a similar (but much smaller) list. As can be seen, very few routes have the same origin. Exceptions are those by Keith Ross (Port Road & WCMLoS), and those being linked by danny3 (MML followed by the lines around London, all by DTG). A number are extensions of existing lines (such as our Extension of the GWML to Swindon in BRBLue period), which obviously have the same origin. If only we had realised the problem years ago, then we could have taken a different course. Do we know how TSW will have route origin definitions? If so, perhaps we could take this thread into account when we come to produce new routes, for the obvious reasons.

Nick

PS you can also list the place of origin, by using a website such as http://www.latlong.net/Show-Latitude-Longitude.html

Am I correct in saying the origin is the longtitude and latitude?
Correct. Here it is from the "RouteProperties" of RSC Liverpool to Manchester

Code: Select all

					<Origin>
						<sGeoPosition>
							<Lat d:type="sFloat64" d:alt_encoding="32772D211FB44A40" d:precision="string">53.4072</Lat>
							<Long d:type="sFloat64" d:alt_encoding="6F47382D78D107C0" d:precision="string">-2.97728</Long>
						</sGeoPosition>
					</Origin>
If 2 routes have the same origin (such as Western Lines of Scotland and WCML over Shap) then they can be joined together.
Here is the WCML Trent Valley origin so from Liverpool to Manchester and this <Origin>
<sGeoPosition>
<Lat d:type="sFloat64" d:alt_encoding="2D431CEBE2664A40" d:precision="string">52.8038</Lat>
<Long d:type="sFloat64" d:alt_encoding="08AC1C5A64FB00C0" d:precision="string">-2.12275</Long>
</sGeoPosition>
Would this be possible to do?

They're close, but not the same.

Aye, Liverpool to Stafford - 70 miles. Even a mile or 2 would make it impossible to join them. I am afraid that you are going to have to bite the bullet and build your route to Manchester. Coming from the Stafford direction trains go to either Manchester or Liverpool, not both, so no need to include LivMan in your route. Only when diversions are necessary would this happen. An express from the south arrives at Piccadilly, and passengers for stations on the CLC line for stations to Warrington change to platform 14. Similarly, an express from the south arrives at Lime Street, and passengers can then take a local train towards Warrington Central. You may have been misled by some of the scenarios for the LivMan route that talk about trains from the south going to both destinations. There are a number from the east (Leeds, Sheffield, York) that do.
