Thanks for replying Gary, I was only wondering if indeed this would work, as I was intending only to use this swapping of Steam.exe in the interim while I'm doing the transfer to the new drive after which, if all successful and working I'll still only have one Steam Client. Seeing that it may take a wee while before it's all back up and running I thought might end up with "Trainsim withdrawal symptoms" and I thought this may be a way around it.

Guess What..................? I've been playing chicken!!. Haven't even started to do the transfer and it's been just over a week since I started this thread, "I tell a lie" I did do a dummy run by making a new Steam folder on the new drive then cutting the steam.exe from the original location ,pasting then executed the program to start it. I noticed that it started up the Steam client and immediately started checking for updates, which it began downloading and installing in this new location.

I aborted the process a very short time into it for fear of everything not working again, deleting everything in that Steam folder and replacing the steam.exe back in it's original location to check if it would start, and it did. After doing this another question popped up. (guess I'm writing here again for re-assurance that this will work   ) The question is: After the checking for updates and installing the necessary files and folders to create this new Steam client and the security check by Steam that it's the correct account holder, is it a two step process? I mean, once the client is up,verified and running, the downloading and installing stops and is finished, until you start the process of getting it to acquire all your owned DLC's from the server when you are ready at say a latter date? hence Not a one step process that will for me, take ages.

Thanks once again, :)

The download for the game should begin automatically, but once the core program has been installed you can (or at least could, the last time I checked though it was a while back) pause the download and close the Steam client down.
Now copy your Assets and Contents folders from the old installation and paste them into the new one. Restarting the Steam client should cause it to check that all is present, so as it will be (it doesn't go into great detail) it should just skip any further downloading.

Well, I've finally done it, sort of. In the end I opted for a full uninstall, having removed all my third party addons via the the windows add/remove program, then uninstalled TS2017 via the Steam client, then finally the Steam client itself. Did a reinstall of Steam and a new fresh clean install of TS2017 on my new 4TB HD with ample room for both, and it runs beautifully. Now I've to decide how to go about installing all my third party routes and addons JT etc, using the installers or by copying over from my backups? I suppose there's Pro's and Con's whichever way I go ? What would most do?

If you were having no issues with any of those 3rd party items before re-installing Steam/TS, then a simple copy/cut & paste from your backups is all you probably need to do---are these backups just a straight copy of what you have or have they been produced by a *proper* backup application?

Hi Gary, A Belated Merry Christmas. Yes, it is . As you say just copying and pasting is probably the best way to go for the most part but what about the 3rd party Routes/Addons that are normally installed via their supplied .exe installers only? JT,AP, SSS etc, when from time to time updates are provided and the installation recommends that you uninstall the previous version first ? Can you install those over the top with on adverse effects, as there would be no Registry acknowledgements etc on the computer (if you know what I'm trying too explain) in a roundabout way.

There are no registry entries for TS itself; as far as Windows is concerned it's part of Steam. Any registry entries are written by 3rd party installers so they know what to remove if/when needed. Removing older versions of routes/assets is largely not needed, as a newer version of a file will overwrite an older one---you're only urged to remove stuff to ensure that everybody with that 'stuff' is running exactly the same version of that 'stuff' which saves a lot of costs in support. This applies to all software, not just TS 'stuff'.
All you'd lose by simply copying/pasting is the ability to remove stuff from the Control Panel applet and probably any installer written to look for a registry entry, and as I've written before deleting anything that's working properly is a little silly, so in the case of *having* to remove an existing version before installing a revised one, cutting the older but working version out and pasting it somewhere safe gives you a very quick and easy way of getting back to a known good installation if the updated version proves to introduce problems---JT's Newcastle-Edinburgh springs to mind here.

Update to this, Well yesterday I have finally finished manually copying over all my TS2017 assets together with all the 3rd party addons and routes(not before doing a complete fresh download and install)from the Internal 260Gb to my external USB connected 4Tb HD ,also mothballed over 80 routes from the contents folder that I have not used in a while, and can easily dropped back in should I wish to play. Have tested a number of routes & scenarios and all going well and to my surprise I'm getting between 60-70fps when running. This should now last me another few years of service.

Thanks to everyone who guided me through it.
