TS2017 Graphics Changed?

Is anyone else having poor performance on the Graphics side with TS2017?
My set up ran reasonably well in TS2016 but things have gone sluggish in TS2017 - I tried the Hamburg - Lubeck route and that was very poor visually, stuttering most of the way.

Out of curiosity... Are you locking your fps, Peter?

I just tried one route - Moselstrecke - and didn't see anything out of the ordinary. Don't have H-L though so can't check that one for you...

Hi Peter, I have just experienced the same thing yesterday and today, but then discovered it was because Win 10 was updating on my P/C. Once the update had fully down loaded and I have re-started my P/c with the latest update fully downloaded and installed, everything seems to be back to normal. Just a thought that may be you are receiving the latest Win 10 update in the background as well.

Hi all,
Only played a couple of scenario's since the update to 2017, can't say I have noticed any poor performance, (ECML L to P and WHLS) if you are playing online then go offline and see if that improves things, I always play offline.
I will play a few more scenario's and let you know if I notice anything to shout about.
Regards,
Pete.

I log each route and 3 types of scenario (have done for 2 years) for cpu usage, ram usage, vram usage, and since TS2017 I have NOT noticed any difference in performance in any of the routes tried so far and with diverse scenarios wrt, cpu % usage (min and max and average), RAM usage %, VRAM usage %. everything seems the same as TS2016 - if it changes I will report back.

Possibly an NVIDIA driver issue - see this thread:

Hi Jan,
No I don't lock my FPS - not sure on doing that.

Hi Rob,
I had done an update yesterday but I'm still on W7 - I will give that another look.

Hi Pete,
I will try going offline and see if that makes a difference. I know there is a Steam Client Web helper running in the background.

Hi Longbow,
I had only just updated my Nvidia driver so I might roll it back but I will give that thread a read as well

Not sure on how to lock the FPS?

Not sure on how to lock the FPS?

Peter
To enable the 30 fps limit command switch - open your Steam Client, access your games library. In the listing of your games on the left hand side, Right Click on Train Simulator and select "Properties" from the context menu. Click "Set Launch Options" and then input

-FPSLimit=30

Please note the minus at the start of FPS.

Yes, Peter, it's done exactly as the above posts says. Try it, it stabilises the fps and may help you get rid of some of the stuttering (provided that you can get more than 30 fps most of the time).

Thanks Rob & Jan.
I will give that a go - does it have to be 30 or would a lower number like 25 work?
And I will see if my system will run at this higher FPS

It can be anything. But 30 is the best in conjunction with forced vsync. If you use vsync, you ideally set it to 60 or 30 or 20 or 15. But there are not many people out there whose system can sustain 60 fps and 20 fps is just not enough to give the right feeling of smoothness. Therefore 30 tends to be the best value.

However, if your PC cannot give you 30+ fps now, the 30 fps lock won't really help you and you should probably consider setting it to a lower value.

I tried the -FPSLimit=30 and the game did not go beyond selecting a Free Roam and watching the blue bar at the bottom so I tried -FPSLimit=20 and the game ran but it did not make any difference.

I'm struggling to find the best settings for the Graphics card - a recent update of something has upset it and the game is not as smooth as before.

I have a desktop computer running Microsoft Windows 7 (6.1) Home Premium Edition 64-bit Service Pack 1
AMD Athlon II X3 455 Processor
8 GB of memory
Graphics is a NVIDIA GeForce GTX 960
And the Steam folder sits away from the C drive on a 500GB Samung EVO Solid State Drive with 43.8% available space

Any suggestions on the best settings?

Thanks

Peter

Hi Peter, have you tried trimming that disk since TS changed from 16 to 17?

Hi Mark,

When you say 'trimming the disk' do you mean creating a partition or something?
I have not changed anything like that - just deleted a few Freeware routes I was not using.

What Mark is suggesting is you use the Windows "TRIM" command to "revitalise" your SSD see here https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Trim_(computing) . However you shouldn't need to, as it runs automatically in the background in Windows (7, 8, 8.1 and 10). As TS2016 does not make many writes to a SSD its a moot point if using TRIM would actually improve performance in the sim.
IMO your processor and RAM could be the issue.
I have GTX 960 running on a (now old) i7 2600K OC'd to 4.2GHz, 16GB RAM, latest NVidia 372.xx driver, Windows 10 AU and that maintains a pretty steady frame rate and I have not seen any changes in resources, cpu usage, drop in frame rates/frame dwell times, ram usage, etc, since updating to TS2017.
Good Luck
