Re: Problem with 7Zip

There seem to be two different approaches being used.

The people having problems appear to be trying to unpack an archive from within another archive, i.e. double clicking on the original archive to get the window showing what's in it and then, without actually extracting anything, double clicking on the archive still included within the original archive and not having any luck.

Trev123, on the other hand, is extracting the files from the original archive and then double clicking on the extracted archive.

Although the problem might be the result of something that's changed, would the people having problems please try actually extracting the files from the original archive and then try to extract the files from the included archive.

That is what I am trying to do. As you see from my screenshots, I "open up" the zip to see what is in. I then try to extract a zip or rwp file to my desktop or other location, in order to do a further unzip. In some cases, it does not allow the extraction, coming up with the error shown. I have been unzipping in this way for years, and most zip files can still be processed like this. There are some that do present problems - this is what I am trying to get to the bottom of.
By the way, I do not "double click" but rather drag the file onto my shortcut to 7zip on my desktop. However, double clicking does produce the same result.

For those having problems it sounds like you have .rwp files associated with 7Zip Console - you need them to be associated with 7Zip File Manager for them to open in the application. Change the association using Open With in Explorer and set 7Zip File Manager (7zFM.exe) as the default association.
Spot on! :D As soon as I changed the default association from 7-zip console to file manager - (I had to do it manually, right click on rwp file, open with, and choose "another app", navigate to C:\Program Files\7-zip and choose 7zFM.exe), and it now opens as described by the OP in his/her first post.
Many thanks for that info.

Well. I've sussed it. And I think you'll literally [p] yourselves.

But first, thanks to all who have tried to help me with this.
Much appreciated.

So.

The solution?

I run 2 monitors, the main one at 3840x2160 and the other at 1920x1080
(the second one used to run at 2500x1500 before I installed Windows 10 - but that's a different story!).

During testing just now, I used every combination of 7Zip - the GUI, the file manager, the console - nothing worked.
Then ... I noticed at the very top of the 2nd monitor a thin (probably just 1 or 2 pixels deep) white line.
Something was there! But what?
Right clicking the desktop, then display settings revealed that the 2nd monitor was aligned with the bottom of
the main monitor. Sliding it up to align at the top revealed................

YES! The window that I always used to see, the one that I thought had gone AWOL, the one that we all were trying to see.

Somehow (and I assure you I didn't do it), the 2nd monitor had moved itself down, relative to the other one.
Yet all the other stuff I use on the second monitor displayed okay. Except this 7Zip window.

So thanks again gents (and yes PeterH, I am a he LOL) for your help.

No problem here doing exactly that from within 7Zip File Manager - the .rwp opens as expected and can then be extracted. This is using a fully updated Windows 10 and the 64 bit 7Zip.

Actually, I find it easiest (for me) to run 7Zip in 2 Panel mode (View / 2 Panels) and then just drag the contents of the archive into it destination location in the second panel - the folders/files are then extracted to the correct place.

You can do the same thing with .ap archives, although the extracted files end up as read only - if you want RW Tools to see them you will have to make them read/write by selecting the root folder, right clicking and selecting Properties, clicking on the Read only check box to deselect it, and then clicking OK on the next two screens.
