Hi,

Another South African route has just been announced, this time with steam trains:

The Outeniqua Choo Tjoe.

This route must be right up your street, Michael Hendle!

It will come with a SAR class 24 steam loco (sadly not the SAR class 25C condensing tender!)

Route looks okay but seems defaulty from the pictures but the rolling stock looks like it's from ps1 era (was the same issue with the other South African route).

Looks better than the Pietermaritzburg route to me I must say.

Was hoping for a GMAM 4-8-2+2-8-4 Garratt but no matter the Class 24 2-8-4 will do just fine.

Well it is a route developed by a 3d party, DTG is only the publisher on Steam. So I wouldn't call it DTG spreading it's wings.

Still good to have more geographical variety!

Thanks for telling me about this route,,it was classified as a secondary route not a main trunk line,so a 25C/NC would have been wrong for for it.

The route is the old garden route,it used to go through to Cape Town,this looks like it's the section now used as a tourist route,in the old days GMAM Garretts and class 24 were used on it.

I just hope the coaches this time are better than the ones on the Natal Main Line,from the outside they are just about passable but the interior view is not at all prototypical

I visited the 'Friends of the Rail' in Pretoria a few years ago and saw Class 24, No 3664 up close and for real... although I would love to see a SAR Garrett on Train Sim, I am MORE than happy to see this gorgeous workhorse getting the lime light for now!!!!

Maybe the even more impressive North British Loco "F15" next... now that is an impressive narrow gauge loco!!!!!!!

The 15F's were a general purpose locomotive equally at home on passenger trains as well as fright trains,The were used on the Bethlehem Ladysmith route across the Drakensberg Mountains,Durban shed only had a handful,of 15F,the Mainstay were 19D,S1&S2 shunters,the 19D's were used on the South Coast mainline from Durban to Port Shepstone.
Looking at the screenshots of the cl24,it looks very realistic,they have done a better job of it,than the 5/6E electric locomotives as used on the Natal mainline sim
I will definitely get this route even if it's just for the class 24,I wonder if it will come with the standard SAR/SAS Box tender and or the Vanderbilt tender.

The name of this route seemed strongly familiar to me.

Sure enough, I already have a version installed that used to be available in the UKTS Library. It was UKTS-27321 "Outeniqua Choo-tjoe route" by "Hermann Kuhne"

I wonder if this is a re-work of that original by Hermann?

Looking on the the route it mentions Johan Pretorius,he used to make locomotives and rolling stock for SAR routes in MSTS days,the 24,looks like one of his models looking at the detail on it.
The model is a good representation of the class 24,& would suit the Natal Mainline Route.
Johan also made a19D,25NC,GMAM Garrett,hopefully he will make them for TS along with a 15F,
I would imagine this version will have the proper Cape Gauge track,the older version had standard gauge track,which used the TS Black 5.

I thought the scenery on the route looked very good, but thought the loco looked a bit lacking in definition, or MSTS'ish?
Time will tell.
Personally I quite like the earlier South African route, so I gather I am at odds with many others opinions of it. All comes down to personal preferences.
