Strange case of missing files?

Post by smarty2 »

Started a scenario and I got a flag saying there were a pile of TTB vehicles/wagons not being able to load? Checked my folders in the train team berlin folder only to find most of them containing blueprint paks only??
I have had in the past had this happen to other folders too, what do people think? Gremlins an overzealous AV even though that drive is excluded from it's scans? I'm at a loss. :-?

The AV would/could remove suspicious looking files, but it's unlikely it'd see every file as suspect. Does it keep a log of what it's done?
Do you run any routine to clear 'junk' files out of your installation?
Any idea of how long it's been since the files went AWOL?---what's the date of the Blueprints.pak files?

Hi Gary, yes I have a junk delete tool in my assets folder but it only targets cost tgt and xml files and I only activate my AV when going online all other times it's disabled so any log files wouldn't apply. As I said the drive TS is on is excluded from any scans my AV would do. Blueprint files are regularly deleted, I have copied over a backup of the TTB folder and will monitor from now on, even though I am still at a loss to the cause?

Of course they would; they'd log the event(s) it triggers whilst it was turned on, so if it was the AV that had removed the files that'd show. I'm certain that it hasn't been the AV though, the removal has been too comprehensive for that. A quick check would be to manually start a scan targeted on the TTB directory.
You have the drive excluded from scanning, but does that apply to 'on demand' scanning? There's a difference between scheduled scanning and on access scanning.

Yeah, it's an odd one.....user error can't be ruled out but if you'd deleted anything by mistake it'd be more likely to be a whole folder or single file than the contents of one with the exception of the .pak file.

You're not alone Mart, I've also had this happen with TTB files, before I changed over to Windows 10, so far no repeat.

Is there anything *odd* about the names of the files?

Whether the file names are odd or not doesn't tell us "what" is deleting them? I ran my AV on the TTB folder and it touched nothing and that drive is excluded from on demand scans too always been set like that, so what is removing files without authorisation?

No, but the question "What's deleting them Martin?" is one you can't answer--the naming might give a tiny clue as to why, which is something that could help find the 'what'.
What are the paths to the now empty folders?

By "paths" I assume you mean this? E:\Games\Steam\SteamApps\common\RailWorks\Assets\TrainTeamBerlin And it appears only to affect the folders containing rolling stock.

Right, as they live in their own folder tree and not tucked under a Steam distributed Product folder (I'm assuming these aren't Steam acquired here) it should rule out a Steam update/verify deleting them. Still no closer to working out just what's happened of course, but it's one less reason to think about.
Are there any reports on their website/facebook/twitter or whatever they use from anybody else about disappearing files?

The TTB rolling stock are contained in folders named in German, i.e. Rollmaterial rather than RailVehicles and Frachtw rather than Freight, but I have never had any problems with them disappearing. All appear fine in TS2016 and RW_Tools.

Just need to keep an eye out that the folder remains at 3.61Gb! It's a mystery for sure! I will check on their website forum. Only thing close is this but that is only one loco and it was back in the day!

Mart, did you have any AP files in the TTB directory after this happened?
