Backing Up

Post by dave13 »

Hi all
Just a quick question regarding backing up. Do you back up the entire Railworks folder or just the Content and Assets folder?
I only ask as I have TS2016 working just fine :D :o :D :o And don't want to lose anything or reinstall all my mods.
I have only backed up the Content and Assets folders.
Thanks Dave:)

Backing up Assets and Contents protects all the goodies we accumulate, but is of little benefit if the program itself gets corrupted. Don't forget the Manuals folder too, for all those non-Steam acquired addons.
Given that copying the whole installation only adds a few GB to the size of the backup it may be just simpler to do just that, and if done carefully would give a proper, working backup instance of the game---just have it living in it's own copy of Steam ; one kept offline to prevent updates from causing grief.

In addition to the Contents and Assets, I also backup the manuals folder

... and the data folder if, like me, you've modded the HUD.

I have always backed up the entire "Railworks" folder.

I am now on my 32nd backup ! It takes me about 2-3 hours to back up on to my 2TB removable hard drive, so I do it when I dont need my PC. I then remove the oldest back up. I keep the two most recent back ups on my Rem HD. At the last count I think the size of my back up comes to around 190Gb !

Its boring, but if you are unlucky enough to need one....you will be glad you did it !

Cheers

Well, with so much stuff 'under construction' I cannot leave out the Source folder also, so for me it is Assets, Content and Source.

I would back up everything in case it breaks big time, saves downloading from steam again and losing 3rd party add ons.
I back mine up to cloud, backs up every hour if something has changed. Invaluable for me who is always modding files etc.

Edit: I should have said 'have a full working back up'

What have you modded in the HUD?
Curious that's all.

Thanks Ash,
for that info, just installed the utility.
To anybody interested, I use SyncBackFree and as an indication of it's performance. Have just used it to update my backup files on my 2TB remote HDD.
In updating my Assets file with 6.1 Gb of new data it took 14mts and the Content with 452Mb of new data 6mts.
I also have backups of RWManual\Packinfo and now the Data folders, these folders backup too quick for me to record time.
Plus also back a folder containg all my payware downloads.

Regards all.

I use Acronis True Image to back up my PC in various different ways. My TS backup runs incrementally every night and backs up the whole Railworks folder with a new full back up every week. As yet I haven't had to resort to it but it's better safe than sorry.

Having just read through this post reminded me that I had not done a backup for sometime, which I have now done. I use FreeFileSync, might change and try this SyncBack as I note that J1o2h3n4 (JohnT) stated it was very quick in performing the backup whether the amount of data has got anything to do with it in my case (I have 425 Gig) backing up only the Assets and Contents folders.

Now as I mentioned before, I had not backed up for some time in which I had installed a number of new addons and updates of of previously installed routes etc. Now for the question I have for those that also use FreeFileSync.

After running through the Compare sequence, and then when finished selecting Synchronize to start the backup procedure I am presented with a window showing a rather large number of mismatched files eg: in the main working Railworks folders, some files may be written as .Capital whereas in the folders the new backup is replacing they are written as .capital (uppercase in the main folders and lowercase in the backup folders) Now normally I would go about manually fixing these anomalies before running the backup. this time I chose Ignore and it proceeded. Does situations like this affect the running of the game as it may be looking for a file/files with this slight difference in appearance?

Antony.
